Laptop Disaster

Being self employed, I rely on my laptop for saving documents and have just found out the real value of backing things up, sadly too late.

I've just taken my broken laptop into PC World as I have a policy to repair or replace for 3 years. The verdict is the hard drive is knackered and I've just lost everything.... All my work records, pictures of my dad amongst other stuff.

I'm devastated.

Take it to a small independent, PC World are not very good at this type of thing, contrary to belief.

A hard drive should never been written off and many many ways to retrieve the data, don't give up yet.

Depending on is actually wrong with the drive the data may be recoverable. It is costly to retrieve data from a failed drive though.

not all at lost the above poster said

same data can be recovered

maybe all of it

pc world tech has no clue an thats the truth

all they want is a sale sale sale no more they dont care if u lost data

definitely go 2 a small pc shop in your town an ask for a quote on recovery is simple

also do a google search there is plenty of web sites about

Its gone for repair now. The guy said the hard drive can be returned to me and that I can try and have the data retrieved independently but that its not going to be cheap.

Some of the pictures of Dad are on Facebook so that's just a case of finding them when I have it back.

The work records are however a nightmare. I'm going to be pulling some late nighters to catch up.

Yes I agree, some if not all should be recoverable.

PC world are awful at repairs etc. Took my desk top in a few years back and they made it worse.

Try a small independant pc repairer who specialise, rather than the dealer you bought it from. PC world are not good at all.

A friend of mine did a degree in computers, specializing in forensics (recovering deleted data from computers etc) and he has stated in the past that, unless the drive is physically smashed up, destroyed, burnt (you get the idea) then some data is recoverable.

I agree with kilted, always have some sort of backup of crucial data. MS Skydrive is free and decent and stores things online. Or get an external drive.

I'll look into local shops. Its the expense that's not easy to cover but its better than the alternative.

It isn't actually that expensive at all and as said even data you believe to be lost can be retrieved, I know plenty of people who can assist if you need any help just give me a shout.

I help out in a small PC shop run by the son of an old army mate. He will always attempt to retrieve any data on a hard drive even if it is beyond repair, and is quite sucessfull at it to. In one extreme case, a company whose customer files had been destoyed, he even sent the drive to a forensics lab and had 90% of the data retrieved.

Take the drive to an independant shop and see what they say.
