NC 500

Rorks drift

Looking at doing the NC 500 next year possibly May time. Anyone out done it during that time of the year or what part of the year is best to do it ?

We did it in August. It is an amazing trip. Make sure you do it east to west

I did it early to mid May last year. Given it was the start of the season the number of camper vans and motor homes was still a shock. I went anti clockwise and the views on the west coast were amazing. Going at that time meant I avoided the midges and the weather was good overall.

What surprised me was the number of stores that only accepted card payments.

While I'm glad I did it I wouldn't do it again x

I took a few days travelling up as I wanted to see a couple of places in the Cairngorms as well. On the return I wanted to do the route from Fort William to Loch Lomond so in terms of my journey it flowed better x

Ok sounds like you had a great trip. I have heard that there are some tight turns and some narrow roads that aren't suitable for larger motorhomes. Did you find that and have you a motorhome or camper ? x

Drove it twice , once in May and was blessed with weather and also in September, not blessed with weather… but still loved it

I've never driven either to be able to comment but some of the A roads are single lane with passing places. I did the trip on a motorbike.

I did the ride on a motorbike. I hired one up there as it’s a long ride up and back for me plus any mechanical issues would be instantly sorted and not effect my time to get it completed.

As others have said I found it very busy, not the open roads I thought I would have, if you’re going to do it I suggest pre booking well in advance any accommodation you need. If on a bike or a car with less range check where garages are.

I also think it was fifth gear who did it in an electric car and highlighted lack of charging points, although this may have changed.

They are now doing a Welsh version of this. I will try that in the spring
