The old system will be switched off in 2025 and landlines will use broadband to make calls. If you rely on a landline, you will still be able to make calls but the technology that powers them will be different

You can still keep your landline, but instead of it connected to your phone box, you will have a box/dongle that plugs into your router, and your landline connects to that.

It’s called digital voice. For majority they won’t keep landline or need digital voice.

Main issues with digital voice is if the power goes out or internet issues etc then so does your landline so no calls to 999 if you needed to during outage. Impacts certain alarms or medical setups.

If you upgrade to full fibre (fttp) you will lose landline unless you get digital voice with your package - note not all suppliers offer digital voice.

Zen offer digital voice that includes calling landlines, abroad, and mobiles for few quid a month yet talk talk offer digital voice practically same cost as old prices and then plusnet don’t offer digital voice

For the main it’s a good thing, but most people don’t like change

What i would say is if you have an intruder alarm/fire alarm in a property or business that you own and its monitored, contact your maintainer company and get them to change your device to dual radio path or IP/radio,

otherwise when the dicsconnet happens your system will show a fault, your natural reaction will be to call them for a callout, they charge you a callout fee and then quote you to upgrade it anyway.

Might have just saved you £150.00+

We have a land-line and I'm paying for a land-line but have not had a phone plugged into it for a very long time so no it won't affect us..

We have a old fashioned phone but it done work it's just there as I love that old style lol.. Xx

When I looked for a new broadband supplier a few years ago I was pissed off that they offered cheaper prices if you also installed a phone line as well. If you didn't want a phone line it was more expensive. I had previously been on cable broadband that was separate from phone and got rid of my landline as it wasn't being used at all.

Haven’t had one for years and am considering ditching fixed internet lines as well , I can get get unlimited data on my phone for £8 a month , just about everywhere has free Wi-Fi now and I don’t watch much Internet TV or have kids needing the internet. I’m currently using a MyFi in the UK anyway

A few contracts I did maybe 2 years ago were looking at end of life for PSTN lines, several people I spoke said that 2025 was a pie in the sky in their view, wasn't gonna happen by then.

I have no real knowledge, just what I was advised by people who did.

To be clear, "landlines" are NOT going but being replaced with intenrt lines.

We got a deal with a broadband/tv provider and went internaet line. the massiavie disadvantage is, if your power fucks off and you have a bad mobile signal where you live - you are f/d.

The old landlines worked via very little pwer from the phone exchange and they had their owne generators or were outside the power off area

This is why the companies ask if you have a mbolible phone when changing over

if i knew beforehand we would not have changed

I use my land line every day and will continue to do so, apparantly there are issues with the emergency call system we old codgers have access to, under the propsed new set up this emergency system will not work if there is a power cut so the likes of Virgin and others have been given until 2027 to come up with a solution.

I have yet to find a mobile phone provider who can give me a good service regarding signal hence my dependance on a land line.

it is no fun having to go up to the top of my road to send a text or make a call when it is raining.

Not us no as we have no landline but the 91 year old MIL will be affected if it has an outage. From what I can tell even if she didn't have BB it has to be provided to be able to use the phone..but she hates her mobile and has very rarely used it, so much so that she probably wouldn't remember how to in an emergancy.

Not long ago Sky had one and twitter was awash with irate people who couldn't use their phones, tele and broadband etc. I was a smug git as we had swopped from Sky two weeks before it

Then the NHS had troubles not long ago.

It is a good thing that techonology moves on but they don't always allow for what happens when it all goes wrong and in this case some people will be left behind.

Yes. I have several plug in phones that I'm rather fond of. I find them beautiful, functional works of art. Over the years I've had some very stylish 1970s ones, some tacky ones like the burger, currently I have a stiletto high heel, a diamond encrusted skull and some rolling stones style lips and tongue. I love phones.

It's gonna get worse too as Theresa May limited Huawei technology telecoms to 30% in the UK..

They have almost all the patents to most of the current + future technology so during the switch over in the next few years , signal is going to get significantly worse yay

It will be a fibre line ( FTTP, fibre to the premises) for high speed internet and phone line will work over VOIP ( voice over internet protocol). Great until there is a power outage. Where copper phone lines will always work , as take voltage (50v) from exchange.

Speaking from experience as 20 yrs with Openreach and last 4 years building the fibre network
