Canvey Island

Today was my second time going and first time solo without PT. I have to say, I have this overwhelming feeling of having done terrible (I.e. form was off and really didn’t feel it).

How do you overcome this? As it’s left me rather disheartened

Mate everything feels awkward and horrendous the first few weeks dont worry about it the coordination comes very fast and soon cranking out perfect form sets will be second nature don’t be so hard on yourself you’ve took the big step on starting just keep at it mate we’ll done for taking the plunge

Hey Jager, doing something is much better than doing nothing. Never be disheartened about trying to improve!

Focus on correct form and you'll find yourself increasing the intensity over time as your body gets stronger.

It will take time, and there will be good sessions and bad sessions, as long as you're being consistent you'll find yourself improving!

You need to get the idea of having the occasional ‘bad’ day in the gym.

BUT……to flip the script on that shit………a bad day at the gym, is a better day than not going to the gym at all.

Don’t look at it as a ‘failure’. It’s a session that you just need to improve on instead.

May not look it but i am a regular gym goer,felt my training had become stagnent and wasnt pushing myself so looked for PT that trains people on 1to1 at another gym where a few PT so the same,cant just go in and do own thing here.

Shown me exersices and routines never would have thought of doing.

Its that push a PT gives you,"4,3,2,1 your there" and "10 seconds,you got this",you just never push yourself as hard as when training with a PT,stick at it

Yeah I have a weekly one to one session with my PT who pushes me, but it’s when I go solo I feel like I hadn’t done enough (when in reality, I probably have)

Most people build up a false image of what training will feel like. They think every session will be amazing when in reality it will be more like:-

80% of your gym sessions will feel just OK, 10% will be amazing, 10% will be terrible.

Getting in and doing an OK session is enough, even if you only manage 1 extra rep or an extra 0.5kg on an exercise. It's about consistency over a long duration. The 10% bad sessions happen but won't hurt progress, at the end of the day you still worked out and it all counts.

Dude don’t bother chasing perfect. That’s not what gets you results. Just show up multiple times a week, every week. When you can’t be arsed, when you can be arsed. When you’re tired, when you’re full of energy is completely irrelevant.

"(when in reality, I probably have)" there's your answer right there OP, some sessions you may be rundown and not just not'on it'.Others you'll be buzzing and think "hang on,i could do that session over again"...do you use any form of fitness tracker,HR monitor ? I use a Polar arm band tracker and app on phone and record training sessions with PT and then do that session 2/3 times in following week,never hit same amount of cals/max HR etc but good to see what effort you get with a PT on your shoulder

My advice would be to concentrate on form with weight lighter than you can manage. Form is more important than weight at this stage. Bad form won't do anything positive and will put you at risk of injury.

Now, the big question. If you don't know what correct form is, you need more PT, or join with a group who can help.

I do know what correct form is for what I’m doing at the moment; it’s just today I felt as though I hitting my form with pull ups.

Only by repetition will we define our form, so it feels second nature. We often learn fastest and clearest, from our mistakes. As the other great posts say, it's the outstanding success of being engaged in the exercise that will get you to a new level. Be proud that you were there

This I think is the single most important thing. The very act of starting is the single most difficult step. Some days you won't feel up to it, but as soon as youbstart to see/feel results, it becomes adictive ...wait till you get an endorphin rush

I started going to the gym daily around a month ago with a 1 day rest day, routine is key and helps so much with my confidence and drastically improved my physical and mental health. Just try to keep the motivation

All the above advice is great!!

Also try videoing your sets, so you can watch them back. I often fund they don't always look as bad as they feel! Also good to go over them with your PT and they can give you feedback as well.

Well done for getting in the gym. It can be a hard step to take. Now just keep moving forward xx

Here's the thing, everything you ever learned how to do in your life, you were bad at to start with. As adults we're used to being good at things, we've kinda forgotten how to learn new skills. So don't think of it as bad or failing, it's learning how to do a new skill. It will come and you're halfway there recognising you want to improve.

Stick at it. Even if it takes a long time. Time is gonna pass anyway - you might as well spend it learning. You're investing in future you. Future you will thank you. Well done for just getting in and doing it.
