From another thread this comment was posted and started them cogs turning...

"One question I do remember is why isnt Wales represented in the Union flag?

I kind of got to the answer eventually "

Hmmm if Scotland get independence will we get a new flag?taking the blue off of it would spoil the design so we should probably start from scratch

Wales is a principality, hence the Prince of Wales.

But we still have the Scottish flag as part of the Union Flag, so if they get independence then we need to take that off.

Lets take it off now and just hope they get independence....if they don't we can always stick it back on again

its attitudes like that, even said tongue in cheek if it was, that mean Scotland may vote to leave the Union! It gets us knowhere! As a Scotsman living in England I fully support the Union, but get frustrated at the petty comments from both sides of the border-it only pushes the "braveheart" beliefs to a dangerous level.

And let's be honest... mel Gibson's dodgy accent and badly applied make up is no basis for Separation!

neither is the misguided belief that the Whisky Industry and Oil/gas reserves will make us the 3rd richest GDP country in Europe as is being spouted by the SNP at the moment. Madness. And to leave that wee idiot in any position as the new Robert the Bruce is even madder.......

The Welsh are represented by the red X cross of St David in the Union Flag. But also in the flag is the red Cross of St Patrick for Ireland. They offset each of these red crosses. This why the flag is not symetrical. The flag of George was placed over the top.

This link demomstates it.

Let's hope that Scotland isn't as stupid as Alex Salmond thinks they are.

Also the Welsh flag that we know today is a recent invention. Early 20th century i believe.

the Scottish Saltire is believed to be the oldest national flag in Europe and the Commonwealth dating back to 832AD. Factoids brought to you by me....
