Looking at the Breaking at the Olympic games thread, it got me thinking. If you could get rid of an Olympic event or change its form what would you get rid of and put in its place?

I'd get rid of Golf or speed walking and give kickboxing or powerlifting a shot in the games.

Driving in the middle lane of the motorway with a vacant look on your face (usually about 3 inches from the steering wheel), despite lane 1 being empty for half a mile...we'd clean up on fucking medals with the spoons i see most days

I’d add powerlifting. I said on another thread that I enjoy the Olympic lifting but powerlifting is more relatable to the average person.

Yeah its unfair that every Olympics Team USA puts out a team that's a whos who of the NBA.

I'd prefer 5 a side football similar to how Rugby is there in the sevens format

Yeah I love the rugby 7’s, so 5 a side football would be good 👍

I'm not sure about the amateurs thing.

Isn't the Olympics supposed to be about the best of the best? Surely that would include professionals.

Think boxing is the only event that is full of amateur competitors. I'm probably wrong though

Oh I was meaning in reference to USA having NBA players being unfair or whatever.

Ah got you.

When it comes to the mens football it's U23 with 3 players being the exception. Something like that could work. The majority of the team would be NCAA standard which is still probably better than most of the world.

This. Although seeing the faces of the organisers when the standard doesn't improve and they realise everybody is already on something they can't test for would be gold

Watch Untold: Hall of Fame on Netflix. It’s a real eye opener when it comes to steroids in sport.

Netball.

Years of lobbying made it eligible but since then, applications for it's inclusion have been consistently turned down due to lack of global reach and its gender imbalance. Brisbane 2032 might be the best bet for seeing it at the Olympics 🤞

I used to be in a few competitive sports at a decent level at uni, the kind of level where they are looking to push you in to the top flight etc. I was never good enough but the constant pressure to go down the PED route was insane, not necessarily steroids but this was the time when blood doping was still a pretty normal thing and things like SERMS and peptides were starting to knock about. The so called coaches were basically peddling drugs most of the time and waving the prospect of england/team gb trials as the carrot.

I 100% believe it. Look at the size olympic boxers put on when they turn pro, look at Conor McGregor after his leg break, even pro footballers going away in the offseason and coming back bulkier. I don’t know why people seem to think this sort of thing is possible with diet and nutrition in such short periods of time.

So many low half life PEDs around that you can blast an off season and be completely clean come the start of the season. I've been in and around bodybuilding all my adult life and even so called natural events are just a snapshot of that particular time. You know full well there's plenty of low half life stuff without many sides like anavar kicking about off season.

I’d get rid of:

Gymnastics

Synchronised diving

Trampolining

Taekwondo

Golf

Football

Hockey

Pentathlon

BMX

Skateboarding

Walking

Table tennis

And I’d also make equipment standard, unlike those stupid rifles and archer’s bows

As soon as I hit post I know I’ll think of something else shit, so that too.

couple, us we him her.

Definitely bin off football it already has enough events and a global competition to find the best every four years.

It pains me as a cycling fan but I'd also get rid of the road race, given how close the Olympics is to the end of the tour de France we don't get to see the very best riders diluting the road race.

I'd bring in Ironman distance triathlon making it the single biggest test of sporting excellence and endurance definitely keeping the non drafting format ensuring that it's the fittest that wins out.

See! I knew I’d forget something thoroughly shite! Get rid of all horsing, but double get rid of horsey dancing and prancing, I bet they hate it when they get back to the stables and the runners start sniggering.

Well as you have said that as a matter of fact the pentathlon is having the format changed for la28 they are removing the horsey section and replacing it with an assault course style event.

The inclusion of triathlon is an interesting story, the ioc stipulated 2 rules, first it couldn't last longer than the marathon, which was regarded as the blue ribbon event. 2nd whoever crossed the line first had to be the winner. Those 2 rules along with the number of competitors just ruled out non-drafting competition sadly.

The relay is a good addition though, I found that more exciting to watch than the individuals.

"...Wasn't the Olympics only open to amateurs at one point?"

It was worse than that. It was designed only for the upper classes. Not just amateur sportsmen, but men who worked as laborers or field hands were not allowed to enter due to the advantages that their manual work gave them over the gentlemen it was designed for.

Of course, there is money involved, you have to pay and see it, but the idea that the athlete should get any of that money was ludicrous 😀
