Reports that Turkey, famous for Turkish Delight and flying carpets, have passed a law to round up the problem of stray dogs and any vicious buggers will be killed. Potentially there are 4 million stray dogs in Turkey. They have not said what will happen to the tame ones but they will probably be killed too. It's all over the news

Do you think the dogs will be escaping on boats Tom. Then if any land on our shores, do you think we will be more accepting of them, than those pesky humans.

The new legislation requires municipalities to collect stray dogs and house them in shelters to be vaccinated, neutered and spayed before making them available for adoption. Dogs that are in pain, terminally ill, or pose a health risk to humans will be euthanised. In principle I have nothing against the idea….

The main criticism seems to be that there will be no extra funding for this, so like other previous legislation passed it’s going to fail or be abused. Previous laws included trap neuter and release programs but with the costs being solely on the municipalities to cover it failed miserably.

In this case it’s likely to see dogs miserably trapped in kennels their entire lives or immediately euthanised because the funding for neutering and kennelling isn’t there. Had the gvt backed up with central funding I’d have much more hope for success.

I holiday in Tunisia and I can say since covid stray, wild dogs in packs are a problem. They get rounded up and disposed of. Absolutely no use for domestic pets. They've returned to pack mentality and are wild.

Better avoid supermarket lasagnes, burgers, and "steak" pies for the next 12 months or so then.

Tom, I think that you will find the Turkish authorities already have fairly decent laws re dogs in the street. They are neutered, they are tagged (usually a tag in the ear) and the locals tend to feed them (as they do the millions of cats that you see there).

However, if you were talking about the pesky chavy cross of St George flag waving Brits who inhabit the streets, then I think shooting is too good for them (and dont get me started on the pushy Russian queue jumping greedy obnoxious pricks out there)

You don't have to as far as Turkey

There is a rescue crisis in the UK right now

Young, healthy, being euthanized every minute, whilst puppy mills and non-registered breeders continue to churn out dogs at an alarming rate

They might not be shooting them in the street but hundreds of healthy dogs die every day right here in the UK
