exspensive MOT failure

Put my daughters car in and it Had a failure bill of £745 not good when i was expecting a bill of around £200 for both lower ball joints.

Ended up costing £405 my mate did some welding for me, i did the ball joints and had to get some new tires.

Whats the most expensive fail you have had ?

My last MOT the car failed on emissions.

Took it to one garage, they charged me £800 for work done to the car but didn't sort the failure out but they referred me to a specialist. Took the car to them, they had it for a week and didn't do anything with the car, I argued that bill.

Finally I got it into another garage and they charged me £350 including an MOT because I was well past my retest time so in total £1150 to get through a MOT

Worst was a grand on my work van but to be fair thst included a new clutch as well, my best mate ripped the piss for weeks then ironically got hit also with a grand mot bill for his van from a different garage but his was for maybe 150 quid worth of repairs tops haha

Years ago I had a Mazda rx8, great fun car but failed on emissions and had to have a new cat, £1200 repairs including a couple of tires and other bits..

I’m a tester the most expensive thing I’ve failed was a motorhome for welding.

It hadn’t been tested properly for years and was rotten, ended up costing 4k to put right, guy had it done ands it’s been fine for the last 5 years

My last work van.

My mechanic advised me not to even put it in for the MOT. And get rid instantly.

Would've been floor pan, engine mounts, full brakes and a few other bits and bobs. Definitely not a cheap one!

Not proud to admit it but after 70+ cars and 21 years driving, last MOT I had was the first straight one I have ever had on a car.

Failed on chassis rust and a rear fog light.

£250 - not bad for a 30yr old car

A good few years back I had a ford Fiesta (mark 4 era) - it took me up and down the Country galavanting about but on my way to my mums for tea one night, bumbling down the M4, my engine blew.

Had to buy a new car.

Was gutted, I loved that car 😭

As an amateur mechanic, life is going to get much more expensive for simple things like fitting new brake shoes need a computer just to wind them off. Car franchises and garages can really charge what they like and more now don’t even let you watch your own vehicle. Still think the backstreet garages are the best where you get value for money.

Had my car up for sale, was offered £600 below the asking price and turned it down. Couple of weeks later, engine issue £400 and still isn't 100% right- following month went for the MOT and failed on suspension, another £400- then had a second suspension issue start which i can sort myself fairly cheaply...but while looking i noticed the cambelt is on its way out and its £500 as the water pump has to be swapped while its being done. While messing round with this lot, the value of the car has decreased so all round, that £600 i said no to will cost me about £1600 and i still have a bloody car i don't want 😤

When I was in my 20s I had a Nova GTE. Spark plug decided to break up internally and had to have the engine rebuilt. Cost me £1000. Which 20yrs ago was a shit load of cash for a 20yr old.

My 2014 Aygo cost £350 for the last MOT. Had it five years now, and the first 4 MOT's it went straight through.

My mum's 2009 Megane cost £1450 to get through in May this year! Had the pleasure of driving it to and from Wales this week...wish I'd took the Aygo tbh!

"dad's garage" is the place to go if you can. Recent VW TSi cam chain, sprockets,tensioner,guide blades, water pump and aux belt, and oil and filter. £295ý in parts only for my son. The only condition is always that I will do it WITH you, not FOR you.

Dread to think what that lot would have cost from someone who knows what they are doing

My ex too a 7 year old Sierra in for an MOT and quoted £900 for the repairs to get it through.

She was in tears and brought the car home as we were brassic at the time.

The first £350 was for a new headlight including fitting as the adjuster was not working. I took the lens off (3 or 4 clips if I remember rightly) and reset the headlamp....cost £0. My time 20 minutes.

The inoperative indicator on the front wing....quote £100 including a new housing. Cost of a bulb was £3 with 5 minutes of my time.

Reasonably new exhaust was blowing on a joint....quote was over £200 for a new one fitted. I used some gum gum on the joint and hey presto, problem solved.

I think that you may getting the drift here. In the end, all that was required was a pot of gum gum, a bulb, two wiper blades and a bit of effort. Well under £30 at the time.

£900 my arse. Bloody cowboys....and they had the cheek to ask for a full retest fee if I took it back (despite the fact that they had misquoted for the rectification of the faults.

£300 is the most I have paid and after 35+ years of driving I think I have e been incredibly lucky with the vehicles I have owned.

Had an Alfa GTV a few years back, that would cost a grand every year without fail. Always needed suspension bushes and a cam belt every other year.

Loved that car though, the only car I've ever been sad when I sold it
