Reports that analysis of racehorse poo at just one month of age is a predictor for how successful the horse will be at racing linked to the number and quality of microbes in the horses stomach.

Could this technique be used on humans to find future olympic champions to rule the world of sport. It's all over the news. Would you have your newborns poo tested and if they show promise then get them training early.

.

Interesting..

So if the child was poo tested and deemed a future talent. Wouldnt the years of training from birth, constant bias towards them, encouragement that they are going to be successful etc because it has been pre determined not put the findings into disrupute ?

Two children would need to be tested and one used as a control for comparison ?.

It's not exactly a big sample size (52 horses) so possibly not "statistically significant". They are also testing from a very specific class of horses - i.e. racehorses - which will be fed a very specific diet to (legally) improve its performance

When I was a little kid my Dad used race horse dung to fertilise his allotment and I always believed his plants grew faster than everyone else’s…

It's interesting but we are not horses. They're are loads of factors that affect recognised potential. In athletics 50% of speed performance is predeicted by ACTN3 either in 1 or 2 copies which is extremely rare in the wider population. None the less simply having these genes may lredict ability it does but mean that you will be quick or powerful. Social faxtors play huge role.

A race horse has the best environment (for a horse ) to perform. Others may not, selection lack or selection and luck can all play apart in how good one will be at a sport.

Well Tom was the fastest runner and he was brought up on Bowyer's pies and chip shop chips and Birds Eye fish fingers that were quality. Not like the poor imitation today
