Depends on your pain threshold but it is quite painful. You may need something afterwards to help with the pain

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

I've had two but had a good dentist who ensured that I was totally numb beforehand. So I had little pain though couldn't drink fluids for hours without it dribbling down my cheek. I looked like I had had a stroke! Make sure that you do not allow any drilling if you can feel anything as they are stripping out the nerves (that is what root canal is) which is highly sensitive. The moment you feel anything tell them. As they get deeper into the tooth the pain will hit.

Have some co-codamol on standby - or extra powerful ibuprofen, which is what I took - and you will be fine.

I had o root canal 2 years ago and had no pain what so ever during or afterwards. I heard so many horror stories before I had it done.

Had two over the years. The first they thought the tooth was dead, only to hit a nerve without aneathestic (teaching hospital), second time everything went fine.

Same with me, I have had two and they were no worse than normal fillings!

I have had about 8 of my teeth with this treatment....As long as he numbs it, it should be fun

as he gets the nerve out you will feel the sensation more than pain, it is easy to confuse the two

Stay calm...that will help immensely

and I am a wuss at the dentist....but I got through it...xx

I've had one, first attempt I hit the ceiling every time she tried to do anything, that was after about 5 injections of anaesthetic. She stopped, put a pain killing paste in the tooth and a temp crown on. I went back a couple of weeks later, the remaining nerve had died off and I didn't feel a thing.

It sepends what your tooth is like. If its been left for a while and the nerves ar dead then it won't be painful. They will just drill out the decay, flush it through with antibiutics, them on the next visit fill it.

If the nerves are still alive then they will nunb it with an injection. It won't hurt then.

But then whilst I don't have an exceptionally high pain threshold, I'm not scared of I njections or anything like that

"How painful is it? Im not a wozz when it comes to the dentist but i want to be prepared"

I had no pain at all. It was a success and I am very pleased I chose it over an extraction. Very pleased.

My therapy was divided into two sections. The only complication I had was that temporary filling came out between the sessions. It was fortunately painless because the nerve and pulp had already been removed. Nothing got infected.

Other than that I was very very pleased afterwards. I think it has a 70 percent success rate. If your offered the choice between an extraction and root canal I would go for root every time. its a great solution!

Complications can happen such as infections but provided you have done the first part of the therapy it should be painless.

No pain at all was felt. the only inconvenience was keeping my mouth open for a while but its a small inconvenience for a big outcome.

If you have a fear of the dentists I suggest speaking to the dentist and start by having your teeth cleaned. this will get you used to the 'drill' and 'sensation' of the drill in your mouth.

But once the anasthetic is administered you wont feel any pain at all. you'll feel a sharp sensation as the needle goes in but thats it.

i opted for the tooth out as it was loose anyway. im glad i did as day before i was due at dentist it broke in half. she did say i could still have root canal if i wanted but the tooth was brittle and it may not work. she gave me the option based on all the facts.

It was a long time ago when I had mine done, so memory is a bit vague.

I do not recall too much pain, just discomfort due to the length of time involved.

The tooth was saved for 10 years or so before it had to come out eventually.

Good luck!

It damn well should not hurt with a decent dentist - we have something called anaesthesia nowadays!! Ok if you have a raging abscess it might be super sensitive, but they can squirt local into the canal as well if need be. Don't put up with pain - ask for more local!

I had root canal a year ago. I was shitting it! It was fine. The sensation is a bit odd coz you can feel them rooting around in there but it didn't hurt at all at the time. It was a bit sore when the numbing wore off I got prepared with paracetamol and codeine (over the counter in boots) my dentist does it twice to make sure there aren't any bits left behind before he did the crown and it was just as painless the second time.

She's lovely to be honest, first dentist I've let stab needles into me. I've no abcess so should be ok.. Stocked up on paracetamol and will hope for the best

I've had three. The first was.worst since I have a problem with dental anaesthetic and it wasn't my usual dentist and he couldn't numb the right bit of my mouth (though my forehead felt like I'd been thoroughly botox'd).

After having my full days worth of anaesthetic I just told him to get on with it. I could feel it and it wasn't good but Tbh I'd put up with a lot of pain in the run up so I was kind of used to it.

The other two were with my usual dentist who got me properly numb and all I felt was some tugging.

It's not nice as they put a rubber sheet over.most.of.your mouth but it was worth it to be rid of the pain.

Just had a re-route canal and had my third and final treatment last Friday. It's not painful at all if suffiently numb. It's a little sore afterwards more of a dull ache.

It's just a long process and if done with a high attention to detail like my dentist did then it's a lot of tinkering in your mouth. Was fascinating to watch.

Find a good endo rather than NHS.

I'm a real wuss when it comes to the dentist, but I've had a root canal and an extraction, and never felt a thing, before, during, or even after.

It deffo helps if you have a good dentist, but it also helps to talk to them first.

Always, always listen to what they say about after-care, and follow the instructions carefully. Don't be afraid to ring them if you think something is wrong.

I really really hate the dentist with a passion. I had a root canal about a year ago. The worst thing is probably the size of the needle they use to numb the mouth. Beyond that, you really don't feel any real pain.

Doesn't help when my o.h is saying the needle is 3ft long....

I had two so far (and possibly got two more to go after a couple of fillings decided to come out, taking a rather larger chunk of the teeth they were in with them).

The first one was on a molar so took two appointments. To be honest I dont'recall any significant pain, just the irratation from the vibrations of the drills through my head.

The second one was one of the front teeth and therefore a lot smaller, again it wasn't painful to the time. Unfortunately there was a slight infection if the gum nearby which flaried up over the next couple of days. So it got a little uncorfortable until the antibiotics kicked in.

Having said that I do have a pretty high pain threshold (I've broken bones and not known about it in the past), so what I think as not being painful might be a little more interesting to others.

He's just messing with your head!

Normal sized needle. You may need an injection into your palette (roof of your mouth) which is a bit more sore than into your gum, but once they take effect all you'll feel is the tugging as they work.

You'll be fine. The only reason root canals have such a bad rep is a hangover from the days when anaesthetic wasn't as good as now.

Mine f**king hurt!

But my tooth was so bad, the nerve was very exposed. I can't imagine all root canal operations are exactly the same so pain will vary.

The way I see it, people who had little or no pain were lucky!

Removing a nerve is painful, however provided the nerve cavity does not become infected there is no pain after the nerve is removed.

See, not so scary. One of those things where the reputation proceeds it and makes people nervous when the actuality is not so bad.
