Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Opinions are going to be divided on this one. People who want to celebrate Margaret Thatcher could choose to stick to the other thread and leave this one for those wanting to express a different opinion. Merely a suggestion.

I don't wish anyone ill will - she was sick for a long time and that is now over.

I think we are still living with the effects of Thatcherism, for good and bad.

I think it's one of those 'You had to have been there' to appreciate the pure hatred.

Obviously you weren't, so have no understanding of the deprivations caused by this woman's policies on entire communities.

I'm talking of people literally being starved/deprived of heating etc.

Bet you don't read about that in the Daily Mail (Der Sturmer) while you're munching on your Cornish pasty of a morning do you?

"Jesus, if some of you get so het up about this, i bet you were fucking heartbroken when Himmler died "

Baroness Thatcher made mistakes and made some great decisions and unlike a lot of Prime Ministers since her, she had balls and stuck to her principles.

Whether you agree or disagree with them depends on your beliefs and also the impact it had on you and your families

Heinrich Himmler oversaw the death camps which saw the killing of some 6 MILLION jews.

Get a life and a grip on yourself

I don't really have an opinion on the lady as I was too young during her reign to understand the impact and find that any talk about politics resorts into childish playground name calling and One upmanship in put downs so bores me quite easily.

I can understand that people who were affected by her policies in a negative manner might be happy but on the other hand I can't. Why lice in the past? We have had many other primeministers since then who have failed to fix things.

At the end of the Fay all she is now is an old lady who has died if a stroke. I find some of the comments on here very distasteful and sad but expected I guess

What is even worse is the personal attacks on those who dare to have a different view

I'm sure that we all might have different opinions depending on where we lived at the time.

As for being teenagers? Yes we were but instead of doing normal teenage stuff we were digging into hillsides, risking life and limb using 12th century mining techniques to dig out coal to heat the homes of the elderly, being attacked by the police for no reason and trying to man soup kitchens to try and keep the communities fed as no money was coming in and we were being slowly starved, in a fashion not a million miles away from the early east european Ghettos!

Were you? Would you respect the architect of this if you were?

You all go and live in Thatcherland Fantasy Theme-park if you want, I'm going to kick back and relax with a nice refreshing bottle of milk.

I think I remember how the Blair/Iraq thing worked. He had to sell it to the politicons to vote Yes or No didnt he? He told them/us Saddam had 'WMD's' I think.

In that case if Im right and you're right, they changed the rules in time.

I havent voted for 15 years approx so that shows how much notice I take in it all.

was always going to be a divisive subject, as she was when alive..

not a fan of her politics and some of her actions during her tenure which should be looked at objectivelly by both sides of the issue..

aware some will delight in her passing and understand why..

pretty indifferent tbh as the damage was done years ago..

fact is the Labour party followed most of her idea's on the free market, and the decisions made wont be reversed by any party..

They'll never stop illegal immigration because it is used as a cheap way to run the economy. It's just following on from the USA, who' s entire economy is propped up by illegal immigrants/cheap labour and would collapse were it to be withdrawn.

It's a real win win area for government as it makes the working class poorer, keeps pay down whilst at the same time providing easy targets to blame through it's sensationalist sponsored rags

Crikey - good to see someone in the UK has money to spend then.

The hatred for this woman in Liverpool is unparralled . She was happy to leave a city to managed decline and protected the police after hills borough as a thank you for the miners strike.

She was evil incarnate and won't be missed.

She'll be trying to privatise the furnaces in hell as we speak

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

For those who may not know (and apologies to those who do) but Thatcherism came from Reaganomics, which, in turn, came from Milton Friedman's Chicago School of Economics. Read up on it if you want to see what it is. Basically, in a nutshell, it is total free market economics. Now, that sounds good, doesn't it? But what that means is raising profits but cutting pay. Cutting tax for the wealthy but also public services (preferrably to the bone - or as far as you can without mass starvation, etc). Which, in effect, means that the wealthy is sucked (at surprising speed) upwards. Now, those proponents on such economics claimed that this would result in what Thatcher referred to as the 'trickle down' effect. This, in fact, did not happen. And, what is more, has NEVER happened in any society which has been FORCED to endure such economic models.

Read Joseph Stiglitz : Globalisation and Its Discontents.

It is an appalling model of economics which utterly crushes the poorer classes to benefit the wealthy. It is what the Tories have been doing (and I include Blair to a degree! He was NO Socialist!) since 1979.

Pinochet did this too - after overthrowing a democratically elected Socialist leader (Allende). And Thatcher utterly supported him.

This is why so many people despised the woman. To argue that you had to admire her because she stuck to her guns - well, so have other dictators! Are we to admire them?

"I'm sure that we all might have different opinions depending on where we lived at the time.

I could understand your hatred if you were still living like that...

Hell, could maybe understand if you spent your teenage years living like that....

My history isnt great, but the period you are talking about was what? 1984-85?

If the death of an old woman 20yrs later makes you feel better.....

I seriously feel sorry for you.....

"

Your maths is even worse, it's nearly 30 years

And yes we did spend a good couple of years living just like that, the knock on effect was devastating deprivation over the next 20 years or so and the areas are still seriously deprived now. This latest lot are making sure that recent improvements will soon be forgotten too.

I'm sorry but you don't forget things like that!

Margaret Thatcher came to power in 1979 inheriting an economy with high inflation. She introduced strict Monetarist policies such as high interest rates, high taxes (for some but tax cuts at the top) to try and control the money supply. This reduced inflation but at the expense of causing a deep recession in 1981. The recession particularly affected the manufacturing sector and unemployment rose to 3 million. Ironic since she came to power with the slogan of 'Labour's not working' after the unemployment figures rose to 1 million (anyone remember the Sacchi and Sacchi billboards?). And she manipulated the figures so that many did not appear on the list! So it was probably a lot higher.

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

Mrs Thatcher and her chancellor Nigel Lawson allowed an economic boom in the late 1980s. Growth reached over 5%, house prices boomed and unemployment fell. However, this growth was too fast it caused inflation and the growth was unsustainable. This led to the recession of 1991 - exacerbated by the decision to join the ERM. That was before Blair.

Also there is a more general criticism of Thatcherite economics. The belief in free markets and individual wealth creation undermined the fabric of society encouraging selfishness and an increase in inequality. Thatcherite beliefs include a support for a form of 'trickle down economics' The idea if the rich get richer everyone benefits. But, this is often not the case.

I think it's in bad taste to gloat over the death of another human being.

I accept fully that her policies brought much misery to many people but that was 30 odd years ago. Move on ffs!

On the 'decimation' of the former mining towns and villages, I have a little experience of the aftermath spoken about by the OP.

We moved to South Yorks from South coast Hampshire in 2000 and lived in a former mining village until 2005.

The house we bought was a bargain - the village was thriving - everyone drove around in newish cars because the housing was so cheap. My OH had a similar job to the one he had down south but for more pay - there were outlet shops a plenty - the motorway network was fantastic and Doncaster town centre on a Saturday night most definitely did NOT come across as a town still suffering from Maggie Thatcher's policies in the 80s.

Things move on - places move on - circumstances move on ... some people, sadly, don't.

Margaret Thatcher's political career has been one of the most remarkable of modern times she served as British Prime Minister for more than eleven years (1979-90), a record unmatched in the twentieth century.

During her term of office she reshaped almost every aspect of British politics, reviving the economy, reforming outdated institutions, and reinvigorating the nation's foreign policy. She challenged and did much to overturn the psychology of decline, which had become rooted in Britain since the Second World War, pursuing national recovery with striking energy and determination. In the process, Margaret Thatcher became one of the founders, with Ronald Reagan, of a school of conservative conviction politics, which has had a powerful and enduring impact on politics in Britain and the United States and earned her a higher international profile than any British politician since Winston Churchill. By successfully shifting British economic and foreign policy to the right, her governments helped to encourage wider international trends which broadened and deepened during the 1980s and 1990s, as the end of the Cold War, the spread of democracy, and the growth of free markets strengthened political and economic freedom in every continent.

Enough said.

The thing is about the idea of 'moving on' is that even now we are affected by Thatcherism.

The truth is that we are still suffering the impact of the massive increases in income inequality under Thatcher, which Blair and Brown failed to reverse.

In the 1980s the gulf between the top and bottom 20% widened by a full 60% – much the most dramatic widening of income differences on record. Since then there have been only minor fluctuations under Major, Blair and Brown. The result is that the gap between the top and bottom 20% in Britain is twice as big as among our more equal European partners. And now, under Cameron, it is widening further.

I remember the riots - I was living not far from Moss Side at the time. I would not be at all surprised to see it happen again. I would be very dismayed - but not surprised.

"Margaret Thatcher's political career has been one of the most remarkable of modern times she served as British Prime Minister for more than eleven years (1979-90), a record unmatched in the twentieth century.

Eh? Where in that lot is there anything to be proud of? Being politically in bed with the hideous Reagan regime which went around the globe overthrowing democratically elected governments, bombing and killing thousands and thousands of civilians in the process, and replacing them with puppet US governments so that they could bleed said country's natural resources dry? Yes, something to be really proud of

There are one or two strange people on this site as there are on all sites, however you really are a sad case having read your pathetic profile it comes as no suprise to us that you would write such nasty remarks hours into a persons death.

Leave this site or better still wait to be kicked off it.

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

The effects of Mrs Thatcher’s economic policy are still being felt today. She went through four phases of economic policy - the Friedmanite "early" monetarism (79-82) , "pragmatic" monetarism (83-85), reverse monetarism (86-88) and the monetarist decline ( 88-90 ). The effects of the first two on the 90s are limited, but the last two had dramatic effect on the 1990s British economy and are still being felt today. The consumer boom of 87-88 was a quick one, superficially created by the government as the 1987 election appeared. This coupled with the tax cuts of 1988 ( when Income Tax was cut to 25% basic rate and 40% maximum rate, and Corporation Tax was cut to 25% for small business’ ), a quickly increasing Balance Of Payments deficit and the fact that Britain was now a net importer of manufactured goods ( for the first time in two centuries ), and we can see Britain heading into the worst depression since the 1930s. All of these events happened under Mrs Thatcher.

Totteridge/Whetstone

Regardless of politics, celebrating someone's death, we find really unpleasant.
