The other thread and this one that I started were posted at the same time.

Looking at the other thread title is does seem a little insensitive. I neither liked nor disliked Lady Thatcher but to be gloating over the death of an elderly woman.......

You know it is interesting that in her time including the late eighties it was almost impossible to buy a maternity business suit - how times have changed for women! And she modelled that women can achieve anything if they put their mind to it. For that alone I admired her.

She was a remarkable woman who climbed the political ladder on her own merit without out sleaze or underhand rumors of corruption.

On a lighter side I loved the caricature of her in Spitting Image AS the wipe lasing Dominatrix... LOL

RIP.

Its not just on here

It appears that nowadays people seem unable to present their _iew without bile or vitriol - there seems a need to express _iews in extreme terms, dislike or disagreement coming out as hatred

This is something that has arisen with the rise of social media and celebrity over the last decade

Whatever your political beliefs the atrocious comments on here and facebook for a woman that stood up for her beliefs are absolutely disgusting and disrespectful. We need more strong, powerful and intelligent women to act as role models. She was a true icon. Whether I agree with all her politics is another matter however she took on a difficult job, she stood by her convictions I wonder for all of those ranting now and then about her decisions and actions.....what did you do about the situation? Did you make a difference? Take any action? Talking and doing are completely different things and I know who I respect and value.

she shaped the world - but she set in train a long line of dominos that set us free to .. be exploited.

In a complex world we need complex rules - and people with her brand of politics - talk simplicty to drive a coach and horses through much of what is decent and humane in the name of merit, freedom, the individual - whereas the reality is that she set the strong on the weak to take the country back to misery of victorian times .

Some may argue that it was as a result of her economic policies (which caused a recession) but those policies were adapted from Reagan's who, in turn, used Milton Friedman's economic model (the Chicago School).

Can't argue with any of that. Well said.

I wasn't a fan of Mrs T in the years she was in power but I was young and easily inexperienced in such things at the time. As the years have passed and I've seen Prime Ministers of both parties come and go I have come to realise that Margaret Thatcher was a breed apart. She stood her ground like a dog with a bone and if she believed she was right she pressed on with her policies. The only time I can recall a complete turnaround was over the Poll Tax, but even that was replaced with what we have now - the Council Tax - and no party has reversed that policy since.

She knew that closing the pits would bring severe depression and hardship to those areas affected by pit closures but she also knew that keeping unprofitable pits open was unsustainable. Many of the pit villages up here are now upmarket places to live, they are pleasant and show little sign of becoming the 'ghost towns' they were predicted to become. People have an uncanny knack of surviving and one only has to look at the Quayside in Newcastle to see how regeneration works and works well.

She was Prime Minister in a different era when unions thought more of their own power base than they did of their member's wellbeing, and Thatcher knew they had to be reigned in else we would face more crippling strikes when we were already on our knees.

We know a lot more about the Falklands conflict now than we did 30 years ago and it is a documented fact that had we lost just one more capital ship we'd have lost that conflict but the alternative was to allow a military junta to invade British sovereign territory and do nothing about it. She knew that would be political suicide and she had no choice but to send our troops south to reclaim the islands - and that is was the right thing to do for the Falkland Islanders.

Did she make mistakes in her time in office? Sure, of course she did, as have all the Prime Ministers before her and since, but her true lasting legacy will be that she governed this country the way in needed to be governed.

Her death has pleased some people - as evidenced on here and other social networking sites - and that was to be expected, but I hope they have their day in 'celebration' at her passing and then tomorrow forget about it and get on with their lives. It would be a crying shame that if even now, with her demise, that some people allowed their lives and friendships to be fractured irreparably by it.

Arse End of the Universe, Cumbria

I was 12 when Mrs Thatcher became PM, she was the Prime Minister of my formative years, a great role model for a bratty teen when I took my head out of my arse long enough to notice! I shed a tear when she was ousted from office and I don't mind saying I had to wipe my eyes this afternoon when I read that she had passed away...for everyone ranting how she ruined the country, there's probably just as many like me who consider themselves to be better off because of the Thatcherite influence. Sleep well Mrs T, poor old Dennis will get no rest in heaven now!

she became pm at the same time i left school and left when i was a husband with two kids. although very few of her policies affected me directly i can see why some are rejoicing in her death. that's for their conscience.she did appear to fuck up a lot of people's lives. one point, I've seen a few say her career 'demands respect'. i thought that had to be earned? she obviously fell way short with some. they may have a point.

It WAS cheaper....it isn't anymore.

But that is like anything that is being sold on a promise....cheaper tomorrow, but maybe not next year.

We were promised cheaper energy when the gas and electric were sold off....the gas from North Sea Oil drilling was said to be so cheap it could be given away for free to domestic users as it was a by product that would go to waste otherwise.....it was NEVER given away for free.

Steel was going to be cheaper to import than to manufacture....soon became more expensive once overseas companies got a foothold.

The truth is that there were far more profit making pits than there were loss making pits, and Thatcher and her ministers allowed the pits to flood to make a political point, rather than continue pumping pits in case of future shortages from abroad.

Smoke and mirrors....

She allowed rich people to become richer, people to make a fast buck buying their council houses (without re-investing the money in social housing), decimated our manufacturing industry and didn't care about the poor - who she made poorer.

Could be worse I suppose - she could have helped screw the economy big time by selling half the uk's gold reserves when the price was at a 20 yr low - only for it the to sky rocket!!

But hey - she must be the only politician ever to do something unpopular in the history of British politics!

Where are my dancing shoes?"

bet you would still buy a british leyland car now eh demonstrate your at one with your comrade workers?

What has been different since? mass immigration, mass unemployment and now this ?government sorting out what should have been done 30-40 years ago. deal with actors & actresses on benefits, cap child benefit by numbers ie two. Put VAT on PM's bar bills

And that perfectly sums up why Thatcher succeeded in turning working class against working class....throw them a bone, some will be able to eat that bone...others won't.

But as long as some of them can then you will have divided a whole class of people.

Thanks for that post, it says far more than most of the posts on Thatcher today.

Smoke and mirrors....

Could be worse I suppose - she could have helped screw the economy big time by selling half the uk's gold reserves when the price was at a 20 yr low - only for it the to sky rocket!!

But hey - she must be the only politician ever to do something unpopular in the history of British politics!

Or so it seems in the eyes of some! "

Thatcher had her own 'Gold Sale'....it was in the form of North Sea Oil, the Council House sale receipts, and the selling of our utility companies (cheaply).

Just like selling gold, just wrapped up and labelled as something different...

Unbelievable, George Galloway (MP) has commented "Tramp the dirt down"!!

Maybe that's how he does things in his litter tray but we're not all like him."

I agree Wishy. Yes I know. I was surprised too.

Seriously though, we here can argue political points and have our say, but it's in the worst possible taste to gloat on the death of someone's mother/grandmother.

You seem to be suffering from the delusion that all working class people identify with other working class people and that they should all be pegged back into eternal sufferance as working class people.

Some of our parents realised that buying our council house was a way to escape traditional working class roots and gain a foothold on the next rung up the ladder. Isn't that what we all aspire to each day we go out to work? To achieve a better life for ourselves and an even better future for our children? Or is it about going to work and earning just enough to feed and clothe ourselves so that we can stand shoulder to shoulder with our 'brothers' on the picket lines without a guilty conscience that we've 'betrayed' our class.

And so it ends....

I've been looking towards this day for much of my life such was the shadow this women cast upon those of us who still believe in socialism, but I feel strangely unmoved - not how I thought I'd feel. Maybe the passing of time has eased the bitterness; maybe the knowledge of her deteriorating condition and senility has poured water on the burning hatred, or maybe it's the sadness that the kind of selfish, individualistic notion of society she advocated has taken root, but I think the 20-year saved Cava shall stay on ice tonight. She's gone and that is that.

My children and grandchildren will continue paying for the destruction she wrought - selling off the nation's assets for a few pound notes and turning us all into a country of grasping greedy I'm alright Jack fuck everybody else mother fuckers with a big slice of misplaced patriotism thrown in.

Think I'll stay away from the news for the next few days.

Ok... Not a thatcherite not any voter. But I was 5 when mrs t came to power. I remember the power cuts and bins piled up due to the unions holding Britain over the barrel.

I remember free milk! I had to have it. I was jubilant when it was scrapped. No more having to sit in and consume a half pint of freezing milk before being allowed out to play.

Yes she sold the infrastructure but lets face it Britain was fucked and on its knees begging the US for international aid.

I remember the miners rioting. I remember the odious scargill. I remember being a teen and seeing Britain booming with the yuppie generation. Loadsamoney and its TRUE most never had it so good.

Granted it is MY generation paying for this now. We don't get free education free council houses the security of a pension. Although i bet most posting anti Thatcher enjoy the luxeries that were up for grabs.

And yes we are still feeling the effects. Thatcher and Reagan had a 30 yr plan and knew the bubble would burst mid 2000's.

What you have to ask yourself is are we better off now because if her? Having grown up through her prominence im afraid the answer has to be yes

You couldn't be more wrong about the youth of today. Don't believe everything that's selected for you to read as there are a lot of well adjusted, well intentioned, good kids out there who are far more worldly wise in their tender years than I ever was in mine. You'll always get the tearaways in any generation, they existed before Thatcher came to power and they've existed in every generation since, but to condemn the next generation and those after them as "greedy I'm alright Jack fuck everybody else mother fuckers" is doing them a huge disservice.

Who's gonna bet the 8:30 BBC doc tonight has one of the highest grossing audiences for a good while?

She may have caused unrest though her determination to bring Britain back to force will still be heard generations to come.

How many individuals and significantly those in positions of power, will truely be remembered in our history, only a handful. She made our tiny fractious island an authority on a global scale.

to be honest i'm neither sad nor upset about thatcher going, but in what way did she change the world?"

actually in more ways than you probably realise...

she was loved in eastern europe.... between her and reagan they helped bring down the iron curtain...

she was one of the first people to believe in a more integrated europe.. and an expanded european union...

she was one of the first to talk about climate change and to get people doing something... none of the climate change treaties would have happened without her...

personally.. as much as i may like or hate her... without right to buy my mum may have never have gotten on the housing ladder....

For those that lived thru that period will know that as a country we could no longer carry on as we had been, we (uk)were finito. Has every one forgotten the winter of discontent? Cometh the hour cometh the man!

Laundry workers on hospital picket lines deciding who could be admitted to hospital, gravediggers on strike, power stations closed down, 3 day weeks, no heating, light or power, Arthur and red robbo leading the uk down the road to perdition, the uk being the sick man of the west, super hi inflation, loaning billions from the gnomes of Europe just to stay afloat. Growing up in the 80's if she hadn't have won in 1979? The Falklands would have been the Malvinas, there would have been weekly strikes - oh no wait a minute they wouldnt as the Govt would have caved every time....

Thatcher was a very very lucky Prime minster. Had the revenue from the north sea oil(started under the previous labour government) not come into the government coffers, she would have not been able to push through her policies and cut the national deficit.

She sold off anything she could at below market value just to prove a ideological point, and then failed to invest the money generated into schools and hospitals that were falling down.

It's all too easy to live in the past and vilify someone specific as the catalyst of all your present woes but if you consider your life to be on track today let's nip back in time and prevent Mrs Thatcher from ever gaining office. Can you be 100% certain your life today would be the same, would you take that risk bearing in mind that you could be a whole lot worse off. We'll never know who would have been at the helm during the Thatcher years nor the ramifications of that person's policies, so what do we do?

Nothing.

She lived in her time and some of us felt her presence in our lives. We're still alive though and we're no worse off for having lived under her forceful will. What that should tell you is that the only person who is in control of your destiny is yourself and if events of 30 years ago are still prevalent in your mind then it is you who has stagnated whilst the rest of us have moved on.

She was what she was and we are what we are. The two are mutually exclusive.

I am by no means a supporter of the Thatcher regime or the tory dick who is in power now trying lamely to emulate her. However the cruel and vindictive comments made on this and many other posts serve no other purpose than to show the world that the posters of such vile comments are no better than the object of their venom. Show a little dignity and self respect, puerile comments are not going to change the events of history.

i disagreed with margaret Thatcher politically,in almost every respect, but as a politician i admired, and respected her,as without doubt the most skilled politician of my time.

when she spoke in the commons, she could make even the most disastrous of tory policies, sound like a resounding success, political genius.

as a labour voter,my greatest hope is, that we can somehow find a leader of the same ilk.

I wasn't personally adversely affected by the Thatcher policies (apart from the poll tax), but Millions certainly were hit badly.

For those that were, then their hatred for her must be hard to keep to themselves, and sees itself pouring out today.

It's no good pretending that her policies and actions didn't impact on the lives of many, and for that reason I can understand their angst.

The law of inevitability dictate that that day will arrive, but when is anyone's guess. Until it does we vote for our favourite, hope he wins, but stand by our convictions in democracy and vote again the next time of we feel we have been mis-served. That's all we can do.

well said.

Evil personified.

Will not be missed.

Evil?

Yorkshire Ripper was evil.

Soham Murderer was evil.

Maybe you should look up the word 'evil'.

"

Definition of the word 'evil':

1. Morally bad or wrong; wicked

2. Causing ruin, injury, or pain; harmful

3. Characterized by or indicating future misfortune

4. Bad or blameworthy by report; infamous

5. Characterized by anger or spite

No politician today from across the spectrum whilst maybe spouting knee jerk reactions would seriously reject the the trade union reforms, and the privatisations that transformed the economic landscape of the UK..that is her legacy.

I have seen loads of comments in various places that are vitriolic in their hate of Dame Margaret Thatcher. Most are from people who were not around at the time or were too young to remember.

There are also millions who think she was fantastic, because they remember what the country was like before the Thatcher era.. Almost constant strikes bringing the country to its knees. We were in a state controlled by the unions, NOT a democratically elected Goverment, but holding Governments to ransom.

Three day working weeks, trains that were never on time when they were running and strikes making sure that was not very often anyway! The car industry was ruined by the unions, asking for unbelievable rises and pricing themselves out of the market, along with most industries...

And the miners! One man on his own wrecked the mining industry. Arthur Scargill! Hi determination to make himself a hero when faced with pit closures, divided the union and his collapse was inevitable! Yes, Maggie was going to close them anyway, but instead of fighting for investment to help his members, he waged war!

And let's clear up one misnomer! Yes Margaret Thatcher stopped school milk, but when you think that the pro-rata cost of school milk was three times that of school books, it had to go! So, books or milk? Today, it costs nearly £1 per pint! Is it beyond the wit of parents to make sure their kids have a healthy diet?

But enough from me. Rest in Peace Margaret Thatcher. You made mistakes, but when you put those against those of Tony B liar and Gordon Clown, you should be everyone's hero!

.. and, arguably, the biggest beneficiaries of those policies have been.... New Labour. Can anyone seriously imagined how Labour would ever have got re-elected without Thatcher giving them the opportunity to shed (most) of their links with the unions? Nope.

Having read through this and the earlier thread (which got too big), it has made me chuckle to see that the majority of the disparaging comments about Baroness Thatchers record have been made by people who were NOT old enough to have experienced work or life as an adult prior to 1979.

Unfortunately for me, I am old enough to fall into that category (just!) and my overwhelming memories of what this country was like before she came to power are of it being gloomy, depressing and in terminal decline. In short, we were a pathetic shadow of our former selves and had lost our standing in the World.

Yes, she DID come over at the time as heartless on occasion - there is NO denying that, but who was going to put an end to 34 years of decline following WW2 if she didn't? And yes, she did do a lot of things which were very unpalatable and cost a lot of people their jobs. The fact is that many of those jobs, perpetuated by outdated practices on both the management and union side of the fence, had had their day not years, but DECADES before and not one single government had the bollocks to do something to turn it around.

The crying shame is that we have, after all the progress in her 13 years in No 10, started to go backwards, led by one government who were a bunch of liars and conmen, and now one which is so damned spineless that they are attacking those who did least to cause the situation we are in. Maggie Thatcher did the dirty work which they now take credit for and have benefitted from politically.

If nothing else, for 13 years Thatcher made you proud to say you were British - if you did any travelling around the world during that period as I did, you will know how much the rest of the world looked up to us - and that is one fucking hell of a good feeling.

"Already threads posted on this folks not being spoilsport just saying.

Sad loss for her family but for me its not caused so much division with her actions and policies.I can completely understand that people come from different camps re this politician. I just find it difficult to accept that people can be so nasty about a deceased person at personal level."

When she caused so much misery to millions (including many of my family and friends), then it's understandable.

It was HER policies that put my father out of work, the worry of which, killed him in his mid-fifties.

So pardon me if I still hate the heartless witch.
