The Town by The Cross

Former Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher has died following a stroke, her spokesman has said.

Lord Bell said: "It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Baroness Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning. A further statement will be made later."

Baroness Thatcher was Conservative prime minister from 1979 to 1990.

She was the first woman to hold the post.

About time - expect we will be asked to pay for a state funeral.

Still, with all the cuts to the services for the poor we should be able to afford it.

I have sympathy for her family. But glad she's gone. That woman caused so much suffering and also supported the Pinochet regime - which was bloody evil and cynical.

I was a single parent in the 80s - and, for some of the time, on benefits. Oh, I remember the impact of her policies. Glad she's gone, whilst also having sympathy for the family. But what a bitch. Hated that woman.

It had to happen at some point. She had a good long run both politically and in older age.

I am no supporter of Margaret Thatcher but she was historic for so many reasons.

Cameron has learnt from her time and when you look at the history and compare the two you will see that she spoke harshly and was more benign. He speaks softly and hits with an iron glove.

I grew up in the Thatcher era so she will always be a formative influence in my life.

Rest In Peace.

"The world will not see your like again"

You mean the one who looked after those who had, and didn't give a fuck for those that didn't due to her policies?

The one, who destroyed communities, broke families up by forcing people to move around the country to find employment.

The one who gave the right to buy one's council house yet never reinvested in social housing.

Yeh right, let's hope we never see he like again!

Love her or hate her, you have to respect her achievement in being the first female Prime Minister.

I'd certainly rank her above Blair because the war she took us into was legal. She also gained from the EU. However, it is arguable whether she sowed the seeds for the latest economic situation by giving power to the banks.

What amuses me regarding the vitriolic abuse heaped on Thatcher by the 'left' is that their own natural political enemies, the pin striped Grandees of the Tory party, loathed her. And yet she largely consigned them to political history along with an overblown, corrupt, self serving, power crazy, Trade union movement, that had completely lost touch with their members aspirations.

Whatever else she did, and there were many ruthless mistakes, that she broke the suffocating consensus between the Tory party and the Unions is a merited legacy.

There should be no state funeral for maggie partly because of hardship and as a nation are meant to be skint, but also because of the damage to the uk infrastructure and comnunities which today we are still feeling the effects

Do not forget the sinking of the belgrano which more or less saved her political life at the time.

Tony blair gets accused right or wrongly of being warmonger maggie was just the same.

No doubt she was strong willed leader but to point of being a dictator.

I dont know why you would not - irrespective of her political persuasion she was the first woman to make it through the glass ceiling. She was highly intelligent, a true leader and admirable in the way she applied her femininity alongside her intellect. As I said on the other thread - I may not have agreed with her politics - but as a public figure I have a lot of admiration for her.

From a humanist stance I also see her as a human being, a mother and grandmother.

I dont do politics either but whatever else she was, she was a wife, a mother and family to many.

I dont think of the person that has gone, I think of the families left behind...

They will grieve like all families do, (we have all been there) and they do not deserve the bile that is being cast around.

She cannot see it but they can. (well can if they have profile on here).

"Great news !!!!!! just a shame it wasnt a long painful drawn out death .

Made millions of honest working class families suffer

Does that include those who took their money and buggered off to sunny Spain?

I am working class , I choose to go for the future of my children , I work out here , very hard at that !!!!"

But I know that many POOR working class people wouldn't even have had the air fare - they didn't even have bus fare half the time.

I dont think of the person that has gone, I think of the families left behind...

They will grieve like all families do, (we have all been there) and they do not deserve the bile that is being cast around.

She cannot see it but they can. (well can if they have profile on here).

Right I'm not very political and was only 16 when she was deposed so don't really have anything to comment about her, it's sad for her family but the important question is do we get the day off work now it's not a state funeral? I'm sure I heard someone that when she died it would result in a bank holiday?

Many will disagree with her policies

But she has been the only PM in the last 50 years to have the courage of her convictions and shown leadership

Since her we've had the lifeless Major, Brown and Cameron, and the cowardly, narcisist Blair

This country could now do with strong leadership again and not the impotent set of MP's currently at Westminster

Why on earth should we admire her.I dont know why you would not - irrespective of her political persuasion she was the first woman to make it through the glass ceiling.

Margaret Hilda causes much debate even when she dies.

Its clear from the divided opinion above that she had her detractors and admireres. My own view point is that she was probably the most divisive leader we have had in the last 100 years and lost reality at some point in her premiership. I admired her forthrightness and her spirit to get things done but she lost sight of the damage some of her policies did to working class communities. She presided over the demise of industrial manufacturing, wholesale riots in our inner cities a partial dismantling of the welfare state. She was the mistress of the sound bite and tried to trivialise the most complex economice problems. She regained the Falklands from a military dictator to whom she openly sold arms in a bid to keep him in power to the point that a third of all weapons aimed at British Service personnel in the Falklands wat were made in part or whole in the UK.

She courted other dictators such as Pinnochete even calling him a hero in the cause of freedom.

Yes a very provocative person who I personally disagreed with on lots of political issues but she had her right to them and now she is dead. I feel for her family as she was a mother and a wife and all the hate or glorification in the world will not be of comfort to her children tonight.

Margaret Thatcher arrives before the gates of Heaven where she is greeted by St. Peter.

"I have good and bad news for you, Mrs. Thatcher," he says, "the bad news is, you will immediately be sent to hell."

Deplorable woman, her and lover boy Reagan were a disgusting double act which has so many knock on effects that the world is still ravaged by their greed and will eventually pay a hefty price for it. People's will only be be bent over and continually fucked up the arse by big business for so long!

I choose not to hate an 87 year old senile women who has just past away.

I disagreed with many of the policies she championed on behalf of her party both domestic and abroad. That said, some of her policies were necessary.

For me, a person died today. The politician died a long time ago. I have no issue 'hating' the politician, I do however struggle to hate the person.
