Is it time to stop giving other countries foreign aid after yesterday saying our country is in so much debt.nobody ever gives us money when there is floods in Carlisle. Wales.ect.nobody looks after our veterans on the streets or the old people who will have to choose to heat or eat in the winter.time we looked after our own.i understand when countries need help Ukraine for example.but do you ever see countries helping us the answer is no.whats your thoughts ? Lets get britain great again put our own people first.

Depending on the metric we are the 5th or 6th richest nation on earth.

We have the money ...it's the unequal distribution

The UK is a wealthy nation. Veterans are on the streets and food banks at a high point due to political mismanagement and a very unfair distribution of wealth.

Foreign aid isn't about fighting wars, it could be about education programmes to prevent the spread of HIV, FGM, or whichever other potential there might be. It might mean building essential infrastructure so as nations unable to provide for themselves have the ability to, whether that is a jetty for boats so cargo can be delivered or (I am taking guesses here) generators so schools have basic facilities.

Foreign aid isn't just about money, it's about influence. India leans toward Russia and China as it gains the majority investment and resources from them, foreign aid acts as a soft tool where nations can act without being seen to interfere.

I am not saying that all the monies ever spent have been spent wisely, but I do think it's genuinely a good. There'll always be a crisis at some level, the fact we face pressures is nothing to do with foreign aid, it is to do with our own lack of planning, training, global issues and on.

Heat or eat is indeed an issue for anyone struggling financially, not just the elderly. The fault lies with the privately owned energy companies and the gvt lack of support

That lack of support is not something that can’t be afforded. As a nation we have the money, it’s the distribution of it that is the issue

Just need to correct a few things here…

Homeless veterans for example:

Veterans uk

Just a few examples that the old pish that there is no support for veterans is patently untrue.

OP, two questions:

1. How much of your salary do you give towards these needy causes you identify, "floods in Carlisle. Wales.ect.nobody looks after our veterans on the streets or the old people who will have to choose to heat or eat in the winter?" I take it that you are volunteering at a food bank, or Crisis, or giving 10% of your salary to Help The Aged and the Trussell Trust.

2. What period are you harking back to for your "Lets get britain great again put our own people first?" I am assuming it's when we had an empire and exploited the countries where there is abject poverty, put our own people in work houses, had children working in factories, and shipped criminals off to Australia. Sounds like you are espousing Trumpian Maga, and we already saw what the exploitative classes did during covid with their parties and lucrative contracts for their privileged mates.

Not when you look at GBP per capitor. We are 25th out of top 27 counties.

You can play with stats all day long depending on your political agenda. Truth is we are officially around 86 million people in the UK, however estimates are circa 100 million.

We have people in need here and weather you decide we should help other countries or not will depend on your own personal circumstances. My view is we need to stop being lied to or become less gullible. Find out where these so called facts are being quoted from. Good luck folks.

Foreign aid is often an investment. And if you want to look after your intrests on the global stage isolationism is a nowhere road. In terms of non-leathal aid for humanitarian and support of keeping the functions of society abroad functioning that is other in our intrests. Partly to buy influence. But also to prevent the fallout of total humanitarian catastrophe and/or civil war and/or regime change. Isolationism just results in disasters happening in far off lands that eventually come back to haunt us at home or stifle our international intrest.

As for lethal aid that's another arm of the same intrests. Sometimes the purest form of humanitarian aid is lethal aid. Because the basis of providing any meaningful humanitarian aid must be first securing a situation from attack.

A prime example of the importance of international aid both lethal and humanitarian to our benifit is the invasion of Ukraine. Because the collapse of Ukraine and an embolden Putin is a real danger to us all. So first we need to provide lethal aid because Putin's aggression is maximalist and outrageous in scale. Without helping Ukraine to prevent futher encroachment (as a baseline) and to secure the situation humanitarian aid is pointless. Especially when humanitarian facilities like hospitals are being deliberately targeted. However non-lethal humanitarian is vital to for our security and a prosperous Europe. Because Russia is trying to make Ukraine fail as a Nation state. But our intrests lay with a strong prosperous European aligned democracy that will have lots to offer the world. So it's in our very intrest to support the Ukrainian people and State short term for long-term benifit.

So don't just see foreign aid as freebies. Often its more an investment that an give away.

Roosevelt agreed to the "Lend Lease" initiative in 1940 although the USA didn't join the war until December 1941.

I don't think we've needed international aid since then though.

Perhaps if we actually collected the right sort of tax amounts from huge corporations and stopped paying Fat Cat dividends or bogus PPE companies, then the UKs financial state might seem, a bit better.
