Dinner party social

I’m hosting dinner party socials with a female member, in Sept in the UK and in Dubai in Oct to start with.

I’ll list as events/meets soon but interested in what people think as a general idea ?

Obviously it’s limited to 8 or max 10 people inc. us as it’s in a dining room, so there’s no room to hide! The idea is to have same number of men / women whether that’s 4 couples , singles or a mix.

Has anyone hosted or been to small socials like this before?

The idea of it goes well is to repeat them and link with / support others doing similar

I've hosted small socials before, they weren't dinner parties but same sort of numbers. What did you want to know?

Is it just to socialise over dinner , or dinner and play??

I think it's a nice idea, great way to create a convivial atmosphere and allow people to talk without feeling lost in a large crowd.

My worry for you would be if they're people you know and who are likely to turn up? Quite besides the cost, it's a huge effort to go to to be let down.

I think this sounds great. But personally I’d want it to be with a group I vaguely knew and trusted - like folk who are regulars on this here forum, for example.

This is a bit different , I’ve been to small socials in pubs etc is that what you mean. This is more like come dine with me kind of vibe.

Did you have hard limits on numbers ?

We do something similar, but more relaxed during the day. It started off as a kind of social, but became a group of friends who enjoy a catch up around a big table rather than a noisy room. It’s a really lovely afternoon and we get to chat to each other properly.

Just social, it’s not an orgy! There may be the odd food orgasm though

Yes, I host small socials (London) — Afternoon Tea™.

There have been two so far, the third is imminent, a fourth is currently in planning. The complement is between 8 to 10 people (I could push to 12), mostly lady forum dwellers but recently I've started introducing one or two men to the soirées to create a 'balance'.

The key challenge has been to keep it affordable so that it appeals to as many people as possible and not have anyone 'priced' out, especially when some attendees are travelling from afar (Midlands, Manchester etc), in addition to catering for those with dietary preferences.

The soirées have been an utter blast with a rich tapestry of incumbents enjoying themselves immensely. We often relocate to a quirky themed cocktail bar for a nightcap or three³.

Yeah I have a few ideas to tackle reliability. I’ve been involved in a couple of play parties in the past and know how unreliable people in the swing scene can be. It can be a if problem, the smaller the event the bigger issue when people don’t turn up.

The cost is less of an issue but another area to think about although I never let good food go to waste ! . I recently cooked for 17 and also for 8 last night , I can do really nice meals to budget & love cooking.

No, dear fellow — they are hosted in a small boutique'y and humble Mayfair hotel, in Central London. It's a relaxed affair, unfussy, classy, chic, but not pretentious or snooty in any way. It's just FUN.

You mean as a host or a guest ?I want to avoid anything cliquey but I totally get you.

Saying that people on here invite strangers into there homes all the time for meets and run house parties , is a social dinner party different?

I like it as an idea, bringing like minded folks together. I'm much happier and more social in smaller groups.

I'll keep an eye on your meets OP.

Thanks - I definitely think there’s people that this smaller concept would suit & others not so much.

I’ve had a lot of interest here in Dubai but then 95% of people here are single , going out for meals is expensive & there’s no crime here, so the idea of meeting new people and eating together in houses is very attractive. UK swing scene is not quite the same

It sounds great and something that we would have been keen on when our circumstances were different.

This kind of socialising is so convivial and relaxed.

They do, but I don’t. Not personally.

I think there’s a balance I’d want to strike. I’d maybe invite people I know and tell each of them to invite one other person. Build a mix of old friends and new that way. Rather than making it a totally open invitation to randoms.

I guess in vanilla world that’s how a regular dinner party works, as opposed to a supper club. (I’ve always found supper clubs too weird - forced socialising with total strangers.)

That’s not a bad idea actually inviting a friend etc.

I think the thing with supper clubs / urban kitchens / pop ups is it’s about dining experience only ? Most p2p dining attempts have failed in the uk because of this .

The social aspect and meeting other fabbers should overcome that hopefully.

I have done a few of these events.

One critical piece of advice I was given that has proved invaluable is meet everyone you are thinking of inviting in person before you invite them. It really sorts the wheat from the chaff. You can also gauge if they will gel with the other attendees.

Not quite the same but we used to host game nights, I mean it was for members of a kik room but they used to be a blast, around 8 to ten people. Happy days they were.

Something like that would be right up my street, as I love socials but sometimes they can be a little to overwhelming for me x

Good advice.

I’ve been the receiving end of that in the past actually when couples parties invited a few single men , we would go out for dinner with a few of the couples the week before to be vetted !

I actually host a monthly risk night as well !

I was thinking if games would work after dinner but they are quite draining of peoples concentration and can sometimes limit conversation. Maybe shithead, cheat and chase the ace…..

Sounds like a splendid way to spend the day, perhaps also a stroll to Hyde Park, to aid the digestion, if one is so inclined.

I used to host monthly dinner socials for years before Covid.

We even did a progressive dinner social a few times where we’d start off at Laura’s house for cocktails, travel together to Elena’s house for starters, mains at Eva’s, and dessert at mine for example. (Totally made up names by the way.)

Recently, in the last few months, a few friends and I have started getting back to our old dinner socials. I’ve only attended one so far and from that came away with a new friend that I’d otherwise never have interacted with.

In my experience, it’s best if you get people to commit to being repeaters at the diner socials. The progressive dinner idea was bonkers! If you can build friendships, trust, and everyone stays in communication between socials they can really become more well attended by all.

I do enjoy these more intimate gatherings. I find up to 12 is perfect for a singular group.

Above that it gets a little overwhelming for my neurospicy brain, the background static of so many simultaneous conversations gets a bit much for me.

Sadly, the vast majority of my friends who partake in such events are not of the swinging persuasion, but it is a moot point. I have one organised on the Welsh coast at the end of August, I suspect there will be an array of fine Whiskey sampled around the warm glow of an open fire. Good times.

Thanks for everyone’s feedback very encouraging. I’ve put up the initial dates I meets section & details below

Sat 7th Sept, Nottinghamshire, UK

Sat 19th Oct. DIC, Dubai

Sat 21st Dec, Nottinghamshire, UK (TBC)

Myself and a single female swinger will host each event and we invite 3-4 couples, or 6-8 singles (or a mix) to each night to come dine with us…. join us for a three course meal, drinks & banter!

These are SOCIAL only events to make new friends and enjoy good food and company.

There is no charge for these events but please bring a bottle , it doesn’t need to be alcohol!

You should be reasonably socially confident to join in conversation in a small group but other than that just come as you are.

If you would like to join us simply send a message saying why you would like to come and the date/location.

Obviously there is limited availability, these are small home based events but we hope to put more events in the calendar and encourage others to do so.
