Is it one of 'the' best movies ever....

I remember watching it 20years ago on DVD when I got my first surround sound system, and was engrossed in that aspect of it.

Haven't watched it for years, but gave stuck it on this evening to test my new Stereo Amp & speakers....

Wow

There's me trying to have a serious conversation about a great movie, and you have to lower the tone

I must have watched that beach landing scene 10 times to appreciate the surround sound effects

Only just realised the Vin Diesel is in it

Yeah it's spot on.

Other war movies I recommend are 1917,

All quiet on the western front,

Flight of the Intruder,

Bat*21

I'm sure there's other gooduns but there names escapes me.

even though the opening scene was breath taking in its brutality, nothing will compare to the bravery men showed against overwhelming odds.

I’m a fan of the movie, as you’ve outlined, the sound effects are absolutely superb!

That said, during the recent D-day commemorations and lots of related discussions regarding WWII movies/recreations, it was absolutely panned by critics and veterans.

Band of Brothers was the standout choice!

Band of Brothers, I completely agree, I’ve watched it many times, but less so Pacific… could never really get into it.

Here’s a useless factoid …. The first episode ‘Currahee’ was filmed in Aldershot, and the mountain itself is Ceasers Camp …. The path you see em running up is one of the many paths up it!

….. also, in the Ardennes, if you go to Bois Jacques … Jacks Wood, which is the wood overlooking the village of Foy Easy Company were in outside Bastogne, the shell scrapes and trenches they dug are still there… it is very eerie!

The thread above relates to films of course But I have just finished a book it’s a biography of Sepp allerberger a German sniper ref his actual life in combat with the Russian army in the eastern front

The book is titled “Sniper on the Eastern Front “ written by Albrecht Wacker

It’s a very uncomfortable book - in fact it’s horror

A bit like that Brilliant film Das Boot - taken from another side of the war not the Allies side

I thought the opening scene was excellent. It was how my Grampy described his boat journey across to Norway during the war (nervous, anxious and people being sick out of fear) so it struck a chord with me (albeit different region obvs.)

I thought it was a bit Hollywood movie in the middle but overall very good.

All the cast had military training before the movie.

Matt Damon was deliberately trained separately from the other members of the principal cast, so he was more of an outsider than the rest.

Just started watching Band Of Brothers.... First episode was excellent, apart from David Schwimmers acting, which was nearly as bad as Nicolas Cage in Captain Coreli's Mandolin
