"the royal family make more money for the country than they take, so no, think how many people come to england to see the palace and spend money here, not to mention the good work the queen does over seas" Can you substantiate the ecomomics? Do tourists get to meet the queen when they visit the UK? What does she and Phil do when they go abroad? A cut in the Civil list of 50 x whatever the tax is seems to be fair?

The point is that the Civil List (or Soverrign Grant as its now called) has some pretty big numbers. Others entitled to eat at this table are The Duke of York (£249,000 per annum) The Earl of Wessex (£141,000 per annum) The Princess Royal (£228,000 per annum) The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (£175,000 per annum) The Duke and Duchess of Kent (£236,000 per annum) Princess Alexandra (£225,000 per annum). All of whom have houses with spare bedrooms...........

"Some people seem to think people wouldn't visit the palace if she didn't live there. they're wrong. the whole place should be open to the public. given a choice she'd rather not live there anyway." The palace is open to the public , I am by no means a royalist but I do think they bring in a lot of tourism and as said above they cost us less than a pound a year. I certainly make up that pound by ferrying tourists to various attractions around London.

"ok im a royalist, i do think the royal family make us more than they cost, lets not forget that the entire royal family costs us around a pound a year each, i will add im not sure of the figures, but go abroad and they love the royal family, and many come here to see buck house etc, and the queen visiting another country is a big deal for that country, think of the good pr for the rest of us, those that think that getting rid of the royal family are, in my op, beeing nieve. the royal family is oneof our greatest assets" They also love David Beckham abroad!

"In the paper this morning it was reported that Buckingham Palace has nearly 50 rooms that are unoccupied with the residents or staff hardly ever venturing in them. Given that the Queen and other members of the royal family are benefit claimants should they be subject to the bedroom tax?" Lol love this

Sadly as she's over 65 the bedroom tax doesn't apply, it only bashes folks of working age.

" Not the whole palace as I said. lack of royals at the palace wouldn't equal less tourists. in fact as they could then open it all year round tourist revenues would increase at the palace.

"I'm curious, and I'm sure someone will enlighten me, but what benefits does the Queen claim? I can't quite see her at the local Job Centre claiming JSA. " Last accounts show the Queen was paid around £35m to run the household. Howver there is the Royal Travel Budget, Royal Annimals Budget.........if you go to the British Monachy web site there is a list of the payments given to the Royals. Very complicated to unravel but all in all its about £86m

"Don't you think they live a horrible life though, they can't leave the house without an escort. They are told who they can or cannot marry. I am not envious of them at all. "

" Nor am I envious that is! Just think we could spend the money more equitably. In this day and age to have a "superior" being is a bit....well last millenium?

I love teaching my children to respect the royal family, and proudly support the royals.

In any event the Queen has an estimate personal wealth of over £1.5b ........its just madness to give anyone with that amount of wealth money from the state purse when people in social housing are being taxed on a position they find themselves in. Its wrong ..........
