The Darker side of Google Glass: Infringement on our privacy or technology evolution at its best?

Google's latest invention, the augmented reality (AR) eyewear known simply as Glass, is not even on the market, yet along with excitement over this possible glimpse into the future, Glass is also causing controversy. It's become the focus of a Stop the Cyborgs campaign, spawned proposed legislation in the US state of West Virginia that bans its use while driving, and is device non grata at one bar in Seattle. Let's hope that if they become a marketable item Swingers' club an will ban them!

Dubbed Glass Explorers, 8,000 American beta users who have been given Google Glass are about to embark on an experiment documenting what Glass can and can't do; the reactions and results generated will determine its future. Until now only a select few Google employees (including co-founder Sergey Brin) have sported Glass in public, mainly eliciting curiosity. But outside the tech-friendly environs of Silicon Valley and New York, Glass Explorers are sure to get different receptions.

Any comments? Howe does the Fab community feel about this?

Ok just looked, cool idea for techno nerd...........cool idea in principle but for me it'd lose its novelty value quite quickly and just become plain annoying.

They are glasses with in-built video that allows the wearer to hear and film anything and anyone without others being aware of it. Data can/might be uploaded onto social networks without consent of those that have been filmed.

I see no use to them, having said that if you d asked me about smart phones 30 years ago id have probably saifd the same,, so its a sit on the fence from me

If they did reach the mass market I guess swingers clubs would have to ban the wearing of glasses, as well as the current ban on mobile phones!

Bad for those that are blind as a bat - but possibly a bonus for any club going fuglies!!!

I spend most of my day in central London. I probably get filmed all day long anyway. I walked the mile and a half from Inner Temple to Leadenhall St this morning and I probably had a camera on me the whole way

I think its a awesome idea, yeah theres downsides such as privicy invasion, but its something that happens with smartphones now, apple and google both keep track of every Iphone or android device anyway. any car that has a mobile assistance device is tracked. they say its just for marketing and device improvment information, but it makes you think what info are they keeping on you.

There is no stopping evolution or technology. They say they want to regulate the use to protect people's privacy...how is that going to happen is a mystery when currently anyone can post anything on the internet? As a number of posters have mentioned, we are continuously being filmed wherever we go...I was coming from the Swinging aspect or the use of these glasses.
