In the nicest way, how well-meaning the sender intends to be is only part of the equation. If you're not the kind of person they want to interact with, your motivations don't really factor in much. Fitting what they're looking for is the main thing that's pretty much non-negotiable here, so more often than not you're not going to get a favourable response (I mean that in general, not you specifically).
