Coming out at a late age is as liberating as it is scary for anyone - but I guess even moreso for someone in (a male dominated) sport and the public eye

Representation and being "seen" is important, and it's a very personal decision for him.

It's one more step along the road (or should that be circuit or track) to when no one has to "come out" any more.

Because people just are what they want to be and no one gives a damn. We're not there yet on that journey, so kudos to him for being another step along the way. Which is why, coming out in this instance IS important.
