Many people have speculated that those creatures are not aliens, but demons (given all the religious/Christian themes in the movie) and the water that kills the alien at the end is most likely holy water. Also at the very end of the movie the news channel mentions that the "aliens" were chased away using a primitive method ( they don't say water - which probably means it was some religious artifacts). This is purely speculative of course...oh and spoiler alert :P
