"It's quite common for doctors to assume that women are exaggerating pain. I believe there are studies that hear this out although I can't point you to any. I have certainly been asked "can't you just soldier on?" When I was in unbearable agony from spinal stenosis because the doctor thought I wanted time off work to go Christmas shopping . He begrudgingly changed his mind when after several attempts, hitting harder each time, he couldn't find a reflex in my left ankle. A woman doctor later told me that I am less likely to be believed because I 'present well'. Whatever that means" Because we look good/well kempt. I've had this so many times... They expect you to look like you've been dragged through a hedge backwards and not washed for a week if you're in pain.

"Well I've heard giving birth can make a woman wince a bit. But it ain't man 'flu, that's for sure." Being kicked in the bollocks is a worse pain than childbirth. I know loads of people with 2 or more children. I've never heard a bloke asking to be kicked in the spuds again. ![]()

"Read Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez. The gender data gap is a real thing. Healthcare inequality is just one result. Mrs TMN x" Agreed entirely. Data gaps cut across race, sexual preferences, and other "knowledge-power" axes as well. Grab a bit of Michel Foucault too for a chance to de-colonise cognitive biases from the way "Enlightenment Europe" set the game up the last 500 years. And Woman At The Edge Of Time by Marge Piercy - one of my favourite books.

"Certainly men have higher pain thresholds generally. " Don't you mean "some men can be a much bigger pain?" Gbat

" On the scientific note, pain can't be measured like heat or electrical signals." I think there's a bit of research done around this. I believe one of the tests was how long can you keep your hand in a bucket of almost freezing water. The longer you can keep it in, the more resistant to pain you are. But I accept that pain might feel completely different to different people. On a similar note, when you see the colour red, how do you know that's what everybody else sees when they see the colour red? Blimey! I need a cup of tea! (Lapsang souchong, lemon juice not milk. See other thread). Gbat

"Is it women who pluck, wax and epilate more than the men? What about wearing really uncomfortable shoes with heels that can cripple? This is before we get into spanking and impact play. None of this really sounds pain free: so based on this, I would say "no thanks, this hurts too much". I have had fillings with out anaesthetic, because the first five needless failed to work, plus the deep muscle massages are really nice. So I'm not a complete wuss. On the scientific note, pain can't be measured like heat or electrical signals." Have you seen the videos of men screaming like banshees when they're being waxed?

The medical professionals describe the pain as worse than childbirth.

There is no SI unit for pain, like there is for electrical voltage, resistance, current, magnetic force etc. The colour red has a a designated wave length, frequency, RGB, CMYK, HEX and Pantone number etc. This is easy to work out as we are starting from a fixed starting point. Think colour blind testing. As someone who has a plastic lens (post cataract surgery) in my left eye, UV is more visible in my left eye and the right is like looking through a dirty car winscreen..

"Turning pain into a gender competition doesn't seem like the best way to actually address the issue " Unfortunately, it is necessary as many men in the medical profession simply don't believe women when they say they are in pain. Or simply don't take them seriously. I saw a gynecologist about a lump and he suggested that I was mistaking my clitoris for a lump ![]()
