Dear God! I never grew up in the Free State! Bite your tongue! I lived in Durban, on the coast - the liberal, English-speaking part of the country. We only drove through the Free State to get to Joburg in the Transvaal.

There was the NME and Sounds when I was a teenage heavy metal fan. I opted for Sounds as it interviewed the bands I was in to at the time.

Kerrang not long afterwards appeared but seemed to be concentrating on US Bands, groups like Twisted Sister etc… ironically for me, too feminine to be serious rockers

But at the same time I started reading Loaded and other lad mags as well.
