Over the rainbow, under the bridge

Quotes from books. One of mine is:

“The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't.”

? Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

As soon as I read that in the first book I knew I was in for a treat!

MAMOBA, miles and miles of bugger all (Aberdeenshire)

“Scientists have calculated that the chances of something so patently absurd actually existing are millions to one.

But magicians have calculated that million-to-one chances crop up nine times out of ten.”

? Terry Pratchett, Mort

Love a bit of pratchett

There's that bit in Witches Abroad when they go to Desiderata's house. There is a stuffed lion's head on the wall and Nanny Ogg cannot understand how it got there. Granny Weatherwax says that she killed it. Nanny's response is something along the lines of 'Can't blame her. I'd have done the same if I saw a big bugger like that chewing it's way through the wall.'

No matter how many times I read that it makes me laugh out loud.

My mate used this always in reference to a girl's boobies.

One's never alone with a rubber duck. Douglas Adams again! I love love love Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, the whole trology on 5 parts. it's brilliantly written and quotable from start to finish.

“Black bears rarely attack. But here's the thing. Sometimes they do. All bears are agile, cunning and immensely strong, and they are always hungry. If they want to kill you and eat you, they can, and pretty much whenever they want. That doesn't happen often, but - and here is the absolutely salient point - once would be enough.”

Bill Bryson - A walk in the woods

"He who is certain he knows the ending of things when he is only beginning them is either extremely wise or extremely foolish; no matter which is true, he is certainly an *unhappy* man, for he has put a knife in the heart of wonder."

A Qanuc proverb from the Memory, Sorry and Thorn trilogy by Tad Williams.
