Reports that German police faced a man with an axe and molotov cocktail at the Euro football and simply disabled and eliminated the threat by their expert marksmen simply shooting the bad guy in the leg. Why is it that the English seem to shoot to kill yet the foreign police seem better trained and better shots. Should the Chief of Police send his men to Germany for better training. It's all over the news

There is no shoot to kill policy.

If the use of lethal force is required, it is purely to eliminate the risk to self or others.

Bear in mind that firearms Officers (In the UK) have to make a snap decision, ensuring that the shot they take is legal, neccesary and will not result in the death of a bystander.

Shooting someone in the leg, at distance, when they are moving is difficult. A body shot is more likely to cause substantial damage to the assailant, less likely to result in a through and through, injuring an innocent bystander.

Something else to consider is that NATO moved from 7.62mm (designed to kill), to 5.56mm (designed to injure).

Olympic standard shooters, snipers etc when presented with a static target, in ideal condition, without the knowledge that every action they take will be dissected by the media, their governing body etc, are more than capable of drawing a smiley face on a target.

Make the target dance, in a crowd, where your whole livelihood is at stake if you get it wrong, and you'll aim for the biggest part.

I suspect the German Firearms Officer dropped his shot ans would have been aiming for the body.

Only in hollywood can you shoot a gun or knife out of someone's hand.

Tom is not police trained but was very skilled with an air rifle shooting cola cans when he was younger. If Tom can hit ten cans out of of ten then a police sniper would at least be equal to that. A can is not much bigger than a mans fist so are they recruiting the right people. Tom could shoot a can or even an old sky remote at 50 paces as could the other young farmers. Maybe the police should recruit more farmers for these firearms units. The type they seem to attract at the moment are clearly not from the correct gene pool. When To hunted rats, it was a moving target and split second decision, but Tom was not called The King Rat Hunter for nothing.

One of the Hungerford victims was hit on the right ankle. The bullet deflected up the leg through the vital organs and exited out of the left shoulder.

There’s already been some sensible answers.

Police in the UK aim for centre of mass for a variety of reasons. They don’t shoot to kill they shoot to stop. Shooting someone in the leg is difficult and poses a greater risk to both the public and the police. It won’t necessarily incapacitate them either- which is vital if a firearm is being used in the first place.

Compared to the UK every German police officer, as well as border police and customs officer is armed. Not sure how to compare shooting skills...

... there is a lot of small firearms around with shooting clubs in every other village ...

... there will be a fair number of inherited (never registered) firearms...

...unsurprisingly there is the criminal stuff too...

... and every now and then someone gets killed...
