Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I agree that expectations seem to have lost touch with reality. It starts very young now.

I am happy with my lot.

I have more than I dared to hope for and anything extra is a bonus .

East Manchester

lets face it, its not unreasonable to think you should be better off this year than you were last year.

Consider how much some of our 3rd rate celebrities get paid for minimal working hours, our politicians who are on the gravy train and even your local council workers who seem to get payrises irrespective of how well the council is run yet still get better salaries than the private sector and an even better pension.

With inflation making your money buy less now than last year and working for pay which is either rising lower than inflation or is frozen for the forseeable future, interest on your hard earned savings being not only taxed but offering interest rates lower than 1% is it any wonder that people should expect things to get better?

Where is the better tomorrow everyone was promised? what happened to the oil bonanza from the north sea?

The gas from the north sea was supposed to be an by-product from oil exploration which had to be gotten out of the way to get to the oil, it was supposed to be an unexpected bonus and be so cheap to extract and the cost would be so low they could give it away.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I only want more money for my job because everyone, council, utilities, supermarkets etc, want more money from me.

Exactly what Karen said.

as a child I didn't have holidays let alone foreign holidays . There is a selection of the population who couldn't possibly not drive a nice car, own their own homes and have a foreign holiday...The thought would mean sheer poverty..to some..

Having aspirations is not a bad thing, otherwise we would make no progress as a society.

Think ive said this before. When i was 15 and ran away from home i had to steal food from a shop as i was starving and didnt have any money. Some guy took me of the street to stay in his place, the whole place was empty except for a rat in a cage. I begged for money, i got in with a group that taught me the best ways to do stuff. Im so far removed now from that person im unrecognizable but it certainly makes me appreciate the basic things such as warmth and food that alot of people havent got

We all do what we need to do to survive. That's an experience that will stay with you but has made you appreciate the smaller things in life which are sometimes the most important!

Yes some of us are, would be nice to have a proper holiday but other than that, not materialistic, so long as I have a roof over my head, my kids are happy, I don't care

I think that there is a huge amount of pressure and advertising making us think we are poor. I have to have a reality check, not being able to buy luxury items is not what the majority of the world would consider poverty. I am lucky, I have everything I need, a house, warmth, food and clothes. I understand the need for aspirations and ambition but at the same time it makes it harder and harder to be happy. It may feel like everyone has more but there are so many people that look at you and feel the same.
