This reminds me of the hordes of lasses on Tinder whose sense of humour would need a laugh track to remind you they’re being funny.

Wanted to add this but bigg finger syndrome....

Sarcasm has many uses: to put people down and you up, for one. Among friends it can be just a sort of joke, but it is meant to be cutting.

Often used as a defense mechanism at times. When people are hurt in some way they often strike out at others and sarcasm certainly

in forums is often used in that way.

Well Granny, the conventional answer is 3 hash browns, using a denary base. Why? Because that's how it works.

However, taking a few liberties with Kurt Gödel's work on incompleteness, an argument can be made that numbers aren't quite as reliable as we'd like them to be. Why? Because that's how mathematical logic works.

But I'll be your patsy - so we'll go with 3. Why? Because you'll probably say so, and you're scary xx.

"I don’t understand it. (Cue the flood of sarcastic replies)

It's primarily a form of deflection

Wanted to add this but bigg finger syndrome....

Sarcasm has many uses: to put people down and you up, for one. Among friends it can be just a sort of joke, but it is meant to be cutting.

Often used as a defense mechanism at times. When people are hurt in some way they often strike out at others and sarcasm certainly

in forums is often used in that way."

Yes to defense mechanism.

I can be very shy.. so use sarcasm to deflect.

I don't take compliments easily.. so use sarcasm to deflect.

And I'm well aware it's not a good trait - be sarcastic and people think you're a dick or be a wallflower and people think you're a dick. So it can be lose/lose whichever

Because essentially sarcasm is using something someone has said against them but it's supposed to funny! It's also a great way of insulating nasty people without them realising it!

Sarcasm is a different language and not everyone is able to understand it!

"People on here don't have the brains to be anything else.

What is 2 hash browns plus 1 hash brown and why ?

Well Granny, the conventional answer is 3 hash browns, using a denary base. Why? Because that's how it works.

However, taking a few liberties with Kurt Gödel's work on incompleteness, an argument can be made that numbers aren't quite as reliable as we'd like them to be. Why? Because that's how mathematical logic works.

But I'll be your patsy - so we'll go with 3. Why? Because you'll probably say so, and you're scary xx.

The answer is 3 hash browns.

Must work harder Nicholas.

Godel would agree that on it's own the symbol 3 has no value"

There's hash browns?

All over

Intention is key. Usually easy to get the kind of sarcasm that is meant as a bit of playful humour andcoften reciprocated. Sadly though sometimes does not come from a good place. Tbh those are often transparent and best ignore the pityful attempts to hurt or show an air of superiority. It works for me. It's only a handful of them.

It is but can so easily be misinterpreted on a forum as the recipient may not judge it as such and the instigator can't judge the recipient well unless they both already know each other. Many get lost in dishing out from those they know to others in the same thread, then tell them they are to delicate or something along the lines, where as the truth be told it was inappropriate delivery that caused the issue.

It should be used wisely so as not to cause offence.

Not sure on that, I often wonder if people would say the same things to someone’s face as to what they post on here, but hey if they feel comfortable with themselves with their comments who are we to question

It 'can' be. Everything is a theory. It isn't enough to say that someone is sarcastic because of A or B or C .... there are only possibilities and no one works in isolation.

By that I mean .... in each situation the driver and the intent will be totally different - a sarcastic person can totally lack sarcasm when in reasonable company that knows how to communicate their needs and wants and treat others as they'd wish to be treated.

Subtle and well delivered sarcasm isn’t an easy thing. It’s got its place in everyday discourse but you need the trust and the context for it to come across well or it just betrays malice.

This. I can be very dry with my witt but will generally only use with those I know well or getting to know if they show signs of it. Can be used as a sign of liking someone, some just between them. Otherwise it can be seen as malice or deflection.

Eloquently put Granny.

A defence mechanism is something that occurs unconsciously, an automatic response to an anxiety-provoking stimulus. There's no way an observer could know that, especially by text in a forum of people.

If sarcasm is used to deflect, consciously that can be a perfectly healthy way to set boundaries. I will use sarcasm in that manner occasionally, the vast majority of times it's playfulness. The deflection carries a very simple message, I'm not interested in engaging with someone who assumes my intentions, it's not a relational dynamic I enjoy or consider healthy.

Not strictly true, we can be aware of our defense mechanisms, and be aware of when we are using said mechanisms, there can be a conscious and sub-concuous drive to using defense mechanisms.
