somewhere

Not many of those brave men left that saved Europe all those years ago

One day it will spoken about and no one will be alive that was there

To see the people from the towns welcome the surviving veterans is very touching

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them

Spare a thought also for the imperial troops from the empire - who served for the British, French, Dutch allied forces.. black, brown of all faiths who have been somewhat airbrushed out of history….

Gone and completely forgotten.

For those who haven't seen it, watch "D-Day 80: The Unheard Tapes". The voices of the veterans, the images, the emotions, all without politicians parading around, or royalty who've never seen action, with a chest full of Quality Street wrapers on their army cosplay uniforms.

Honour the heroes, both the survivors and the fallen. We owe them everything.

Respect to you.

Spent my school years in Aldershot.

The town has so much respect for soldiers...ex and serving.

Our local shops are flying flags of all the nations that helped defeat Germany. It looks fabulous.

My grandfather served in WW1 and was Home Guard in WW2.

Utmost respect to everyone who served. Such sacrifice for what we have today. I hope we never have to experience anything that they went through.

North West

So much Edward Elgar today, on top of all the thinking about the events of 1939-1945. The whole thing is quite emotional for a lot of reasons, in my family. Well, actually, in my head because I think I'm the only one who actually thinks about these things.

I don't want to hear any more Nimrod for a while, thank you world

I was very moved by the chat between President Zelenskiy and the US veteran. The US veteran had, among other things, been involved with aid drops to the Netherlands.

Lifes departure lounge NN9 Northamptonshire East not West MidlandsMidlands

My father served in WW2 with the RAF in India and Burma against the Japanese.

I had two uncles who were active in the D day landings, both were tank commanders, both survived, one unscathed the other badly burned when his tank took a direct hit.

Sadly both my father and both uncles are no longer with us. Not one of them ever discussed the war and what part they played in it.

Yesterday my thoughts were with them and it was a very emotional day for me.

Worthing

Both grandfathers saw active service. All we know is one was in Europe and the other in North Africa. Neither discussed it and we did not ask.

Reading

It's fascinating to read about the secret agents and how their efforts hugely increased the odds of victory. Read Ben Macintires books.
