The tanks that have been given to Ukraine are not the more modern versions but versus the current Russian ones head to head will still be superior..

The Russians are emptying their stick of obsolete kit, some fifty years old..

The latest Russian ones are too it’s because they are able to target the top of the turret without endangering the attackers. There are some basic defection mods being employed but it’s difficult. They were never envisaged to have this threat.

I have thought that warfare is rather like a game of chess.

There was a time that territorial disputes were settled by a game of GO in China. The logic being it was more civilised, and prevented loss of life and resources.

With so much technology that we could essentially accurately replicate the battlefield virtually. If we are still so obsessed with barbarism as a method to resolve conflicts, why not do that? I mean a drone is already remotely operated, what difference would it make if it was virtual?

Sounds far fetched maybe, but then the same principle was applied thousands of years ago with a board and stones.

But yes to answer your question I believe the tank has become obsolete and is now a death trap.

The first issue here is define modern warfare.

The Bosnian conflict provided some evidence that AirPower could bring about a victory, however, the threat of boots on the ground ultimately brought about the surrender, if there was such a thing.

The modern battle tank has the biggest boots of all.

The current conflict in Gaza is proving that even in asymmetric warfare the tank is an enormous force multiplier.

Tanks have only ever been shown to be of any use in two situations. Tank against tank and in support of large scale infantry advances. Modern warfare, as shown in Ukraine, does not lend itself to reliance on tanks.

In fact technology has always been the biggest factor in war. For instance, the machine gun and artillery were the deciding factors in WW1. Radar, air power, aircraft carriers, battleships and intelligence were the deciding factors in WW2 (plus the atomic bomb).

It could be argued that in the very near future, if not already, aircraft carriers will be obsolete. I think that Ukraine has already shown how easy it is for modern missiles to render the Russian Black Sea fleet non existent.

I would fully expect the UK's 2 aircraft carriers to be sunk within days of any full scale conflict with a major power.

Tanks that are used in armies low on ammunition and without any proper support will fail. That said, keep in mind a bunch of ammo starved and exhausted eastern Europeans have been holding back the Russians for the last 8 year's.
