Preference or fetishising?

I had a conversation with a friend the other day about how a lot of people fetishise partners. My example being, it's very common for men to want a "BBW" in the bedroom, but less common for them to want to be seen in public together. Her example was "am I not fetishising my husband for his height? I only like tall men, so therefore I'm fetishising them, right?". But where is the line? Is she fetishising her husband when his height isn't the only thing she likes about him and they've been together for 15 years? Or is his height her preference but not the only thing that makes her attracted to him?

Anyway, the word fetishising is starting to look and sound weird to me now.

I think it’s more fetishising than preference when it’s obsessive or if it’s something that might involve objectifying a person for a characteristic.

I think preference suggests it’s something you prefer. Not something you obsessively crave or just weirdly overly fantasise about. I wonder also if preference mean that you prefer something meaning you like other things too.

Anyway I dunno if I’ve ever heard of someone fetishising height. But I agree people often do regarding weight

You always know how to word what I’m thinking

I think another difference is that preferences, you’re still open to having a partner that might not fit into those preferences maybe?

Yes for sure. It feels like an answer to the question ‘what do you prefer, X or Y?’

Doesn’t mean you don’t like the other, you just prefer one

A fetish is more than a preference. It’s something you have to have to turn you on. So if you have a preference for something over another that’s not a fetish

What Bird said.

Having a preference isn't a fetish.

Enjoying a particular aspect of a particular person in a way it doesn't affect you with someone else, that's not a fetish either.

I like that, very clear distinction.

It's an absurd fad this. Humanity survives by way of fetishisation.

It is fetish if you are not into an activity. It is a preference for the activities you are into.
