And no.......i no longer smoke and rarely drink....Before anyone mentions internet....my brother pays for it ...... But then i dont work so why should living on £7 bothger anyone. Hang on how much benefit does he get? I get £130 a fortnight! "You won't get that for ever. 6 months then it can stop (depending on circumstances). Then you get a some work, a few weeks here a few weeks there. Then you have to claim again next year. But they won't let you because you did not have enough NI contributions for the previous tax year. Your in the poverty cycle then. You lose your house because they won't help with mortgage (even just the interest). So you end up in council accom at the governments expese! Now there's logic for you. | |||

" Ha we have a tenant who we are always chasing for his rent, he rings up all the time to complain about the bin area, the state of the scheme he lives on but funnily enough you can't get hold of him when he has missed a payment
Then there is the tenant rep who rings the housing association I work for because the bins haven't been emptied and we are expected to contact the council ourselves, yet this man doesn't work and often comes out with 'don't you know who I am!' | |||

"Hi all I'm unemployed after working for 30 years and now I still have to pay Council Tax on Tuesday, anyone in the same situation?
Regardless of how long you have been working, if you aren't working I feel you should pay something.
It's a hard life but why should anyone not working, not have to contribute.

"Wish I only had to pay £19 a month instead of £100 a month council tax and yes I know I'm not unemployed but i might as well be as I've likely less disposable income by the time I've paid out for everything particularly childcare costs!! I actually think its right that everyone should pay a small percentage as let's face it employed or not you still expect the same services that the council tax goes towards!! What pisses me off is the die hard benefit claimers who have no intention of working but come in complaining if the bins haven't been collected or the streets swept!! £187 a month here for council tax...any one want a swap that's your own fault for being a posh git lol

There is always a way you can make a little bit of money and anyone living on benefits that isn't earning a tiny bit on the side must be getting help elsewhere because you can't pay your bills on benefits. Start by selling some of your stuff on fleabay, once that's gone see what else you could sell, you can easily make £20 a week doing that. I had a lovely 4 bedroomed detached house in a desirable area of Manchester.
Worked full time, paid for my child in a private day care, then I was hit with ill health that started off with a sick note, then statutory sick pay, now registered disabled.
I was made homeless, had to apply for social housing and for 18 months, I refused to dent my pride and claim benefits, therefore getting into huge debt with rent and council tax arrears.
I lost every single friend due to the stigma of being on benefits. | |||

People on benefits are NOT the only people who are having losing out at the moment, everyone is. I wish we only had to pay £25 a month council tax instead of £130 a month! I was on bebefits for a while due to not been able to get a job...This was down to personal circumstances so I for one understand real life... It is hard. The benefits system is there for those that need it. However what gets my goat is those that abuse it and commit benefit fraud. I work full time and really do struggle to make ends meet and live month to month. I have not had a holiday in 5 years as I can't afford to. Sometimes I get frustrated with the lack of help if you are single and earn just over the working tax credit element. I do wish the OP the best of luck in finding work but I do worry where I am £80 per month to pay the council tax and yes I do pay it as its a priorty debt. | |||

Can I just ask if the OP has sky tv or virgin packages etc? If so, get rid and there is your council tax paid! Want to do it? should you have to do it? We can see the outcome of that for the less responsible claimants, but the government think people want to be treated like the working public and be treated as responsible adults. There will be a lot of claimant's who already manage their money but there will be a lot who will be spending their rent before it is due....creating another cycle of homeless people when they get booted out.... another government initiative well thought through!! xx | |||

Not if for example he has been unfairly dismissed , and redundancy payments often aren't the huge pot that people got in past years, statutory redundancy pay is not a lot unfortunately. No idea what the ops situation is. I was unfairly dismissed and won at tribunal, however by then it was too late, all my savings gone, the amount won is all gone, I have just sold my house at a loss to stay afloat, previously sold my car and got a cheap run about to aid the work chances etc. When I retrained to improve my chances my benefit was stopped as I wasn't actively seeking a job on minimum wage, I was doing something far better for the long term. After 20 years in senior retail mgt I stand little chance there at the moment, but you get no support. In brief, redundancy, savings, friends, family support doesn't keep you for long these days. And no pay rise for over 5 years when employed. | |||
