...I'm searching for a song from the late 60s/early 70s that is mainly instrumental and features either woodwind instrument or a flute. You'd know the tune instantly as it was a worldwide hit and is timeless, but for the life of me I've never known it's name nor who the artist is. It's a sort of hippy tune and very indicative of it's time. I've searched through Jethro Tull's discography but I just can't find the darned thing (not even sure it's a Tull song tbh).

The woodwind instrument is the main instrument played on it and it's quite a laid back number.

Long shot I know but if you post your suggestions I can youtube them and see if we hit the right song.

(obviously anyone under 25 won't have a fookin scooby what I'm looking for)

I am definitely over 21, let alone 25 years old, but despite the memory lapses, here's a few suggestions.

I too thought of "Stranger on the Shore" by Acker Bilk. Look out The Carpenters too, as they used a lot of woodwind instrumentals.

In a slightly later time frame, you could consider Peter Skellern - maybe some of his earlier stuff?

Not sure if you are still looking, but knights/nights? In white satin by the moody blues has a long flute solo. Ok, there were vocals but the flute solo is memorable. I didnt much like them as a band but i did buy that single.

The two artists I would look at for their discography's of that era that might feature a flute, pan pipes or something like that would be Fleetwood Mac or Cat Stevens. One of the latter's hits featured a woodwind instrument of some kind quite prominently, but I can't remember which one off the top of me 'ead..

Living in the past was the first song that came into my head and I was humming it as I read the posts. Then before I got to you finding the answer to your question I thought of House of the King, by Focus and started humming that too. They aren't that different.
