somewhere

I loathe the word pretty, my ex husband would call me it and really wound me up when I wanted to look sexy, to be stood there in some nice lingerie and "you look pretty" is not the word I want to hear, to me it's like when you are 7 and have a nice new dress on and your nan says "you look pretty".

I'm sure his heart was in the right place and he was trying his best but for me, the word irks me no end!

I guess it's a matter of perspective.

I think pretty is better than sexy, personally.

Both are lies regularly said by men.

So not much difference.

Around the Midlands

Both are ok/not ok depending on context. Hope that helps

Never understood how you can be called either on this when there are no face pics

Not necessarily lies, but I get that so many blokes band those about so much that they lose there meaning,

Pretty is as others have said tends to be for young girls, beautiful is many faceted, it could be purely on looks (but the interpretation of those looks varies immensely - beauty in the eye of the beholder and all that) or it could refer to character or behaviour as in a beautiful soul. So it's perfectly reasonable for someone to see you as beautiful even if you don't see it in yourself

Ok not lies, just words said to get women into bed.

Could never be me.

The main complaint I've received in relationships is that I don't compliment them enough.

If I said you had a beautiful body would you hold it against me

I think I see pretty as being rather cutesy. A pretty face being one that's sweet. Beautiful in terms of appearance implies a more womanly sort of beauty. I'm aware it's my view and a bit odd.

I get called pretty more than beautiful and I don't mind. I have chubby cheeks and quite big eyes and I don't see myself as beautiful.

Two ways of describing the same thing and on here never never call anyone beautiful before you see a face pic

Sometimes you just need to alliterate.

Beautiful butt and pretty penis sound better than t’other way around.

I suppose it's a bit like you're more likely to call an older man handsome than you would a much younger man

There are subtle differences. For example, you can call a man beautiful without it being feminising, but pretty doesn't really work in the same way. Beautiful seems more sophisticated and adult. Pretty is infantilising. Sort of.

Pretty / beautiful are very much the same thing. A better question would be pretty/beautiful or sexy as they are completely different things. Some ladys are sexy without being beautiful. Don't ask me to explain as I can't but I know it when I see it

I absolutely agree with this.

I don't think it's odd at all, but I am biased.

Not odd at all. That's pretty (not beautiful) much how I'd describe it.

I see pretty as an aesthetic type compliment and take beautiful as a full person/personality included type compliment - but that's just me.

I had guys message to call me beautiful before I even added any pics so yeah they are thrown around to become somewhat meaningless.

Handsome can apply to women as well as men, and seems quite appropriate to the sort of beauty that never leaves a woman.

Pleasure heaven

Imo pretty is a bit superficial and can be condescending.

Beautiful can be used to describe a variety of bodily features in a generic way.

Higher up the scale of attractiveness you find the individual then you would have to find the appropriate word.

Something better than hot or sexy haha

Fair enough, but blokes aren’t going to get very far telling a lady “you’re about a 4”
