Should engagement rings be treated like any other gift or as a symbol of intent - and thus be given back when the intent is no more?

My ex still has the one I gave her. It was my grandmothers and it is to be passed on to my eldest daughter.

Didn't hand mine I had given to me and sold them years later at the end of the day unless they ask for them back(it's a family heirloom) then no

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

Never got one and even bought my own wedding ring which I wore on my thumb until recently when I moved it to my index finger.

The law states that the ring should only be given back if it is stated at the time of giving that it should be returned if the engagement is broken

I offered mine back but he declined....I do have three.lol

one marriage.....lol

I think it depends who calls it off.

IMHO, it should be treated as a gift and it is for the receiver to keep.

I did offer to give mine back when the marriage broke, however he said no.

So I sold it.

Surely it's a gift and the woman should keep it. Unless it's a family heirloom, then it's only fair to give it back.

But I think they are pretty pointless in the first place. Total waste of money!

Just get married.

I wouldn't want it back, what on earth would I do with a used engagement ring?

I think it should be a statement of intent, and not a gift, this is something very close to my heart, and has happend to me just recently

My ex asked for the ring back so he could give it to his new girlfriend. Very tacky!

Again unless a family heirloom I'd not give it back...it is a personal thing, a gift from man to a woman and regardless of the split it was always intended for that woman, so why should she give it back.

My ex kept hers because she wants to give it to our daughter at an appropriate time. At the end of the day I gave it to her.
