Somewhere In The Ether…

Ey up again good folks

A serious post this time:

What is the longest amount of time that you have been without (or unable to) sleep for?

More than 96 hours. I was delirious. Almost hallucinating. It was horrible.

Chronic insomnia for over a year with long periods of 1-3 days of no sleep at all.

Finally, I can sleep like a normal human again.

St Leonards

Just under 2 days.

I didn't like it at all.

I could feel myself becoming like one of those normal people.

My sleeping is awful. I do a 12hr nightshift, sleep for 2-3hrs then back out for a 12hr nightshift. This happens twice weekly and leaves me drained and numb from emotion.

Our eldest didn't sleep properly until he was 5. Number two is 2 years younger. So I had 5 years where I got woken up multiple times a night, but for three of those years it was by 2 children who only wanted mummy. I could sleep for an hour, get woken, settle one child, sleep for 45 minutes, settle the other child, maybe get 2 hours sleep, settle the other. All night long. Every night. It was hell. Christ knows how I managed to work, my head felt constantly fuzzy.

They both started sleeping through around the same time...but by that point I was pregnant with number 3...

With no sleep at all probably 36 hours. With very little sleep probably five years when our children were babies.

72+ hours and started with mild hallucinations, it was terrifying.

This was when my youngest was tiny and never left my boob or screamed if he did, I'd never been so exhausted!

I'm not a great sleeper, by any means, but I wouldn’t class myself as an insomniac. I just wake frequently.

My only proper experience of sleep deprivation was probably when I had my first child. It took around 72 hours, with 48ish of those being hard labour. He didn't sleep through for 5 years either, waking anything between 5 and 15 times a night.

No sleep at all? About 3 days. I was a wreck by the end of it and finally crashed. Little amounts of sleep, I can go a week but have gone two weeks with having no more than an hour or two a night on average. I have awful insomnia to the point of it making me ill on more than one occasion.

This is incredibly dangerous if sleep can not be achieved

In the 1950’s in America they did a physiological experiment to keep a young man awake for days ( so sorry should have Dr Googled this for accuracy)

The outcome was mental illness which he permanently suffered from there after

It’s awful with small children when they are ill !

plus - if one works, and then can not sleep !

100% empathy

Managed 2hrs sleep and 1 power nap in 4 days once while working, Tight going that was lol

Thankfully not doing that job anymore!

Now usually run 20/24 hours before seeing the bed.

Working odd shifts and flicking between days and nights 2 times a week, no eating routine no sleeping routine duringthe week.

Just having no routine is the killer atm for me.

Took part in an ultra endurance event this year. Had no sleep for 50 hours… Adrenaline and coffee got me through…..

Slept for 12 hours solid afterwards….

Normally for about 3 hours at a time… awake at least twice for an hour or so each night.

I’ve been a bad sleeper since I was a kid I think I’ve always dreaded going to sleep and then my head kicks in, over thinking. I think the longest I’ve gone is just over 3 days with no sleep when I was serious stressed n depressed nothing worked plus it was really hot.

When I first started working at my new job being anxious I had 20 mins sleep each night and it’s a physical job lots walking picking stuff up took almost 6 months before I was getting even 4 hours sleep.

I caught covid few years back and after 2 weeks off work. I just couldn’t sleep getting back to work one night I didn’t sleep then it was 10 mins, people at work couldn’t believe I was even at work, they said I looked so tired which I don’t normally with no sleep. I managed 6 hours on Thursday and a Friday kid he gave me a lift was so relieved I looked better I worried him.

In recent years, 50 hours. Had a lot going on in life and the effects on my brain were not pleasant

My Guantamo Bay days, didn't get much sleep, between the water boarding, white noise, doors banging, people shouting and stress positions, there wasn't time for much sleep.

I have chronic insomnia, thankfully, I've been prescribed a sleeping tablet by my private physician for about four years now. It has helped immensely and I'm very grateful to sleep like a normal person.

Leeds (Home) / Sheffield (Work)

85ish hours due to a devastating life event. The effects are not trivial! Hallucinations, paranoia, confusion, etc, which then makes it hard to fall asleep when you finally can.
