Jumping the shark

Have you ever watched a series, been really invested into the plot and the characters but then, slowly the story starts getting dafter, the scenarios more convoluted and then suddenly something happens that makes you think “that’s bloody ridiculous” and you lose all interest.

Out in the internet world, that’s called the ‘jumping the shark’ moment and happens quite regularly.

In deference to that particular event, what was it for you where you fell out of love with a series and why?

Somewhere In The Ether…

I can list quite a few in fact.

The Affair being one of them; Starts off as a fascinating drama showing the devastating after effects of the titular extramarital affair and ends in the future.

Along the way there was also a bit of murder and hallucinations thrown in for good measure by writers who clearly were scrambling desperately for ideas to keep the show going longer than it needed to

Series 11 of The Simpsons. There was still a couple of laughs here and then but the poison spread very quickly.

I watched a recent episode and it was absolute dross

I ain't having this, that was the greatest moment in televisual history! Mainly because of my nan's reaction to it, she was not happy!

It’s an all too common occurrence facing we hapless humans. I mean, the alien buggers should at least ask us if we wish to board their craft first; it’s only common courtesy after all…

Oh god, so much this! I adored the first series, but was raging by the end of the second series, it became so convoluted. Third series was like a totally different show. Think there was a fourth series too?

Game of Thrones. Was great through season 6 for the most part. Things quickly spiralled to shit in season 7 and especially 8. Shame

That reminds me of another one: The infamous scene in Dallas wherein Bobby Ewing, who was previously dead, suddenly appears in the shower, rendering the two previous seasons as merely Pam’s dream(!!!!)

That took some gall on the writers part!

I was much the same. It seemed like a deliberate attempt to be as obtuse as possible, rather than just telling a story

The Witcher. I don't think there was a particular event in the series, I just got massively confused as to what was going on, and who everyone was. There were too many characters and I didn't understand what they were doing or why. It's a shame as the main characters were great.

All together "toss a coin to your Witcher"

Lost! I can't remember what series I gave up on it but it got ridiculous. One of my friends watched it until the end and was so disappointed and angry with the ending. I don't think she's ever forgiven the writers

Definitely lost! Gave up at some point in the 2nd series, just got the impression they were making it up as they went along and couldn't follow where the plot was going

Tom loves a good documentary like, When Sharks Attack and diving in those cages when the bugger actually gets in. Tom loves Jaws and history has repeated itself. The tourist chief keeps the attacks quiet so as not to ruin the tourism industry. Jaws was a great documentary

The Walking Dead during the later seasons. It went from an interesting horror programme to a confusing mess. I stopped watching and decided to read up on how it ended.

The Manifest jumped the shark after season one. It went from being sci-fi but within realms of reality to total rubbish and so far outside of any semblance of reality that you’re left bored.

Supernatural. There were some great episodes in the later seasons but the first 5 were quality TV

Scrubs with season 9 which was just unnecessary

The MCU after End Game. Not a TV series but still applies.

The first season of Westworld is one of my favourite seasons of anything. It was damned near perfect sci-fi. I really loved season two, as well. And that's where they should have stopped.

As has been mentioned, season 3 and 4 were basically a different show. Over-written, confusing and lacking the insight and heart of the original series. I hated them. Sigh.

If you enjoyed seasons 1 and 2, were unfortunate enough to see season 3, don't watch series 4.

Transsexual Transylvania

Agents of Shield. It started off really well. Limited to the MCU, with genuinely good plots and characters. But it slowly became untethered and more ridiculous, until the season where they all were thrown forward into the rubble of a destroyed Earth that only they could go back and prevent being destroyed. That season jumped the shark. We stopped watching it, and don't have a clue how it eventually ended.

Scrubs was supposed to end after Season 8 and the send off JD and the hospital got was perfect. I always consider Season 9 a failed spin off show since it has very little in common to the original

Totally unnecessary
