Or rather be fined for taking pebbles or shells home from a beach and especially in Cumbria which is the area not quite in Scotland but not quite in England either.. Cumberland Council, which shares it's name with the local sausage, warns tat taking 1 sea shell could result in a £1,000 fine and that criminalises every child in that Principality that has even been to the beach. Great work Cumbernauld Council. You can be proud of yourselves. It's all over the news

somewhere

I remember about 5 years ago, we went to Brighton and we were walking up to the train station and my step son was walking up the hill, with so many pebbles in his pocket (we heard chunking going on but didn't realise he had a quarter of the beach in his pockets), his shorts started to fall down! Still makes me giggle to this day x

I can just imagine that people will start feeling guilty and throw their shell and pebble collections in the dustbin.

Never mind the 'sea dredged aggregates' industry!

Councils across the country are into making money for nothing whether it be parking, littering or shell collecting

I think they should rightly be proud of themselves.

Over here people are constantly removing pebbles and stones from beaches, sometimes by the trailer load for landscaping.

I've seen people remove saplings from forest parks.

The leave no trace policy doesn't just work one way. It means leave it as you found it.

I don't understand why taking a pebble or shell is such a bad thing? Maybe I need educating?

As a child we used to pick a shell every time we went to the beach they all went into cement in my aunt's back garden, we had a little patio full of memories.

To be fair there is probably a tipping point so that if a small child takes just one she'll then the whole of lowland England could flood

It does make you wonder are the sea levels actually rising or is these pesky children we have to blame

Maybe England needs to follow the Dutch and have more dykes

What about groups of bored grockles who sit all day on shingle beaches mindlessly throwing stones towards the sea, thus changing the shape of the beach?

Should they get nicked for perverting the course of nature?

It's better to leave places as you find them and beach ecosystems are no different.

The council could potentially educate people
