So again today we have the annual pointless boat race. I cannot see the point of it at all.

"So again today we have the annual pointless boat race. I cannot see the point of it at all."

What's so wrong with a little bit of culture. For those competing in it it's a worthwhile even to participate in and can open doors later in life. My uncle is a mason and he organises a hospitality event at the finish location every year. Regardless of what you think about the Masons they do a lot of good work for charity and that's what the proceeds of his event goes towards and the famous names the race attracts increases the amount he raises.

Not just the rowers but the cox's too, plus the trainers and support staff. It is a prestigious event to be involved with and there is more to it than 16 men racing against each other.

In your opinion. Millions watch it each year so from that one can deduce that for them it is far from pointless.

Did you feel the fervour of the Olympics in London last year? Did you care if British Olympians did well or not?

Here's a few facts about the 'pointless' boat race then:

The Boat Race has undoubtedly proved a useful springboard to Olympic success, with London 2012 no exception. Andrew Triggs Hodge and Pete Reed (Oxford) joined Tom James (Cambridge) to win gold in the four, Constantine Louloudis (Oxford) and Tom Ransley (Cambridge) won bronze in the eight and George Nash (Cambridge) won bronze in the pair.

Last summer's Games saw 13 current or former Blues compete (seven of them British), and four Olympians will be in action today, including three medallists; Cambridge president George Nash, Oxford's Constantine Louloudis and his crew-mate Malcolm Howard, who claimed silver for Canada in the eight.

Yes olympics was great i was at swimming events was fantastic. The big difference between the boat race and olympics is the best in the world complete against each other whereas the boat race between two universities. No comparison whatsoever.

You are flogging a dead horse trying to interest me with history of it as do not care and accept folk strangely like it but not me.

Sport has to mean something for me to watch. The Olympics were great and of course we all got behind Team GB. But the boat race is rarely a thrilling event and is only really relevant to past and present Oxbridge students. I couldn't care less which one wins, have no real interest in rowing and despite I'm sure there being some decent athletes participating I'd rather mow the lawn.

But then you could really say that about any sort of sport...... My passion will always be big 10 college football and basketball being a kid with Midwestern roots and sensibilities

We could have the audacity to say that about any sport you like as well.......

It is what it is.... Boat race this weekend.... Grand national for example next week... Any I bet we could use the same argument for that

One year the university of Liverpool made it.... And for some reason the oars went missing... Lol

P.s if you want a serious answer they do something call the head of the river race where teams do the same course going off at 10 second intervals....

Having rowed for 6 years at

School and raced to a national standard the boat race is an exhibition of some of the best rowers in the world competing head to head in the only meaningful race they will have this year. It's a big deal to some, but to others it's pointless. To me people who say they see all sport as pointless are equally pointless as they don't get that sport isn't just about competition against others it's about developing yourself. Often people who don't like sport weren't properly taught it as kids where it was a chore rather than a pleasure. Oxbridge rowers do this race training 6-8 hours 6 days a week and then do their degrees as well. Hats of and go the light blues

Starting threads to state on opinion will usually lead to others commenting, one way or the other if they are interested. The assumption might be that if you post it you are interested enough in the comments that might be posted.

Not sure the OP was moaning, just posing a question. As with most things some people love it, others aren't interested. I find it interesting to see peoples _iews one way or another. It would be boring if we all liked the same things.
