I have three all time fave books.

War of the Worlds

Lord of the Rings

HMS Ulysses.

Currently I'm not reading anything due to the fact that Ernest Kleine's

Ready Player Two was so piss poor it put me off reading for a bit.. even trying the warm embrace of Bill Bryson didn't help.

I read the Hobbit and LoTR when i was young, probably got me into reading .. i just picked up War of the Worlds and 1984 and i'm half way through HMS Ulysses on my kindle.

Won't be adding Ready Player two to my list then !

I'm a big fan of Don Winslow, highly recommend the Power of the dog

Reading

I'm currently reading Brotherless Night by VV Ganeshananthan which I'm loving. It's shortlisted for the Women's Prize and I've just nearly cried like 4 times and I'm only halfway through. Really interesting story about a young girl who wants to be a doctor during the Civil War in Sri Lanka.

Yep!!!

I'm going to set myself a challenge..

Randomly choose a book.. start reading it.. give it 50 pages..

Mind you it could make things worse, bit I need to try something.

That's a good idea. I used to set myself a ten page a day target for a random book.

I also used to choose a book at random in the library I got to read a lot of excellent books I wouldn't normally have. I also found myself with a lot of unreadable dross

It's always a risk but it can really broaden out your reading especially fiction , biography and autobiography. Non fiction is more tricky in my experience

Currently reading The Shards by Bret Easton Ellis.

It's a sort of inverted American Psycho at the moment with the focus on potential victims of the serial killer rather than being told from his point of view. 200-odd pages in, it is absolutely brilliant.

Yeah .. I prefer a book I really want to read rather than risking a random one. I'll read anything that gets good recommendations or reviews - not very original. I do like a book that mixes fact and fiction and going through a WW2 phase

I really enjoyed the Thursday Murder Club books by Richard Osman. They aren't to heavy and filled with humour, character observations and touching moments. They are more about personal relationships with murder as a sub plot. Definitely worth a read.

I started frequenting these 'Bring a Book Take a Book' libraries in phone boxes or churchyards as I work all over the south west and discovered so many genres I previously dismissed out of hand by taking the risk of a random. Who knew I (LB) had a penchant for chick lit, autobiographies, murder mystery and detective novels after only reading fantasy and sci=fi for decades. I now have a carrier bag of books in the works van and my car as I don't just take one book now as much as replace the whole contents.

How are you finding them? I bought the christmas book, followed by 5 others books i dound in mont condition in a charity shop. Saly, I colnd't manage more than a few chapters as i found his writing style terrably off putting. Everything is diologue. Just pages and pages and pages of diologue. So much in fact that i found easy to lose track pf who was saying what.

Do they get any better, or are thy mostly the same?

".. whats your favourite book or what you reading now ?

"

Right now I am reading 'A Gentleman in Moscow'. It had bene sitting on my TBR (to be read) pile for quite some time, and i'm only just reading it now. Its fairly well written, and the story is interesting, with likable characters.

Next on my list is .....

Death comes to pemberly. OR

Good Omens. OR

The hobbit. ITs probably going to be the Hobbit as i haven't read it for over a decade and feel the need to start the whole LOTR series again.

One of my favorite books is 'Fingersmith' by Sarah Waters. While i engjoyd her other books, Fingersmith had an affcted me in ways noth other book has. I read it from cover to cover, and cold barely put it down. There was one moment around half way through where I was so outraged by a characters descision, i scream "NO!" out loud and threw the book down and sat there arms crossed tryign to ignore it like a child having a tantrum. .... This was on the London undergound! lol God knows what other people in the train through .

A series you might like is called 'Scoundrels'. (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34610627-scoundrels?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=XErZxUe4is&rank=1

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/41442733-the-hunt-for-hansclapp?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=XErZxUe4is&rank=2

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/59745058-scoundrels?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=XErZxUe4is&rank=3

They are really fun and well ritten, with bombastic charcaters. You could easily imagine one of them being played by Rik Mayal, especially in his role as Alan B'stard or Lord flash heart.

Speaking of Flashheart...

The Flashman series, by George McDonald Frasier. The character, Flashman, is the basis for Lord Flashheart (from blackadder). It follows his adventures and misadventures though the his career in the british empire. The man is a total cad! A cowrad, and a scounderl. But, charming with it. Admittedly, some of the language is no longer acceptable, and some themes we now know to be wrong. But they are extremely well written books and I cannot reccomend them enough. Buy the first book, and you will be hooked!

If none of those take your fancy then I cansuggest the Murder Mystery / Detective books from the British Libray. They re released a number of them including...

A myster in white by J Jefferson Farjeon. (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/142458.Flashman?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=5gqCSW2orL&rank=1)

It is THE perfect christmas day book, but he does have others such as 'The Z murders' and 'The thirteen guests'.

Death in the tunnel' by Miles Burton

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/26077475-death-in-the-tunnel?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=eLFtOSZp60&rank=2

Is anothr pefect xmas day read, So buy them now and you might be ready to read thm by then, assuming your TBR is as long as mine!

And one last curvball, as it is summer, perhaps something by Jane austen?

https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/jane-austen-jane-austen/1016272669?ean=9781435167964

Those Barnes & Noble collectable editons and simply beautiful. If they hav a sale on, they are incredible value too, especially given the exchange rate.

Also, a personal favorite is Ian M Banks culture series.

His first book in an incredible seris is Consider Plebas.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8935689-consider-phlebas

Its Science Fiction but not like anything you have seen before. It is High brow science fiction, and vast. I highly reccomend them.

Sorry for the long reply, but as a fellow single guy, I too have a lot of time on my hand lol

London (She/Her)

I’m listening to, ‘When Life Gives You Vampires’. t’s as bad as it sounds, but good light weight nonsense for when you’re feeling poorly.

Also, the protagonist is a plus sized woman and I think this is the first book I’ve ever read about a fat woman as a normal person (until she becomes a vampire) and her having to question her relationship with her body, learning she will never become thin now, and learning her appetite can no longer make her fat.

A myster in white by J Jefferson Farjeon. (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/142458.Flashman?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=5gqCSW2orL&rank=1)

It is THE perfect christmas day book, but he does have others such as 'The Z murders' and 'The thirteen guests'.

Death in the tunnel' by Miles Burton

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/26077475-death-in-the-tunnel?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=eLFtOSZp60&rank=2

Is anothr pefect xmas day read, So buy them now and you might be ready to read thm by then, assuming your TBR is as long as mine!

And one last curvball, as it is summer, perhaps something by Jane austen?

https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/jane-austen-jane-austen/1016272669?ean=9781435167964

Those Barnes & Noble collectable editons and simply beautiful. If they hav a sale on, they are incredible value too, especially given the exchange rate.

Also, a personal favorite is Ian M Banks culture series.

His first book in an incredible seris is Consider Plebas.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8935689-consider-phlebas

Its Science Fiction but not like anything you have seen before. It is High brow science fiction, and vast. I highly reccomend them.

Sorry for the long reply, but as a fellow single guy, I too have a lot of time on my hand lol

"

Thanks, I really like the sound of Fleshheart, Fingersmith and the Scoundrel series so will add them to my ever growing list ! I'll have a look at the others and probably add them too But really appreciate the reply and recommendations.

I'm reading 'Trio' by William Boyd. It's an easy read and I'm enjoying it; I love most of his stuff.

His 'Any Human Heart' is an all-time favourite.

Cross Hands

Jupiters Travels, by Ted Simon.

Just coming to the end of it.

Brilliant adventure travel; around the world on an old motorbike, when travel of this kind wasn’t commonplace.

Very well written, and one of those books that’s difficult to put down. Highly recommended

Theres been some great recommendations on this, i've added a lot of books to my list and hopefully i can pick them up out and about in charity shops and 2nd hand book shops - Fab to be read list, i'll post it later if anyone else wants to pick any of them up.

I'm just finishing the Psychopath Test which is worth a read.

I love the Don Winslow trilogy, the Power of the Dog, the Cartel and the Border Lord all in my top 5.

I really liked Blacktop Wastland by S.A Cosby and he has a few others i'm keen to read now.

From a Scottish Perspective some of John Niven's stuff is great, the 2nd coming is one of my favourite books and some of it made me laugh out loud (on the bus in and out of work) and the amateurs is also very funny but you might need a translator for the West of Scotland language.

Garden of beasts and the twelve by Stuart Neville are other books that left an impression as well as Gamorrah by Roberto Saviano - which is now a brilliant Italian tv show on Sky Atlantic.

Last one from me is No one listens to your dads show by Christian O'Connell, just an amazing, open and honest book which really made me think..

I read a book every week. I'm currently reading Skint Estate by Cash Carraway. I get lots of books from the library or charity shops. I've read Shuggie Bain and Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart recently which were good. Alan Partridge: Nomad is silly and funny.

"I'm on a Discworld re-read and am on Reaper Man

I've never read any of the Discord books and tried to get into it starting with The Colour of Magic but some reason I couldn't get into it. I think I find it hard to visualise some of the more fantasy elements of it "

Tbf the earlier books are not as succinct as his later stuff, he's still just finding his feet. My introduction to Discworld was Hogfather and then I went back and started at the beginning

"Good Omens is one of my favourite books.

I also weird love the Long Earth"

I struggled with the Long Earth series, I felt very little Pratchett was in it and it was more Baxter's work. Shame, as I liked the concept

I read the whole series but it's really only the first two I liked. I think though it's more because I liked the entire concept. The idea of being able to click your fingers and find and empty unspoiled world is extremely appealing at times
