about disability? If you currently identify as non-disabled, what are your fears about disability, either the prospect of acquiring disability or any involvement with them, e.g. in the course of your every day life?

If you already identify as having a disability/ies, what fears do you have around your disability/ies?

Some stats around disability:

Disabled people make up 10% of the global population, around 650 million people (Source: World Health Organisation).

39 million disabled people in Europe (Source: CSR Europe).

11 million disabled people in Britain (Source: Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit).

Over 7 million people or 18% of the working-age population in Britain are disabled as defined as by the Equality Act 2010 (Source: Employers' Forum on Disability).

Only 17% of disabled people were born with their disabilities (Source: Institute for Public Policy Research article Work for disabled people).

Britain's disabled people are estimated to spend £80 billion per year (Source: DWP).

2% of the working age population becomes disabled every year, 78% of disabled people acquire their impairment aged 16 or older (Source: Employers' Forum on Disability).

One in four people will be affected by mental ill health in the course of their life (Source: Mind).

One in six people of the working age population (aged 16 to 64) in Europe has either a long-standing health problem or a disability (Source: Employers Forum on Disability).

One in four men and one in five women will suffer a critical illness before they are 65 (Source: Health insurance: the online guide to critical illness insurance).

I am going to bomb and roll a bit, at least initially, because I'm out and about but my brain has been working overtime on this today.

i think i would be more frustrated about not being able to do what i am used to doing and being so independent it would be hard to be any different. I tore my ACL/MCL and other bits over 12 months ago and was 5 to 6 weeks in a big slab brace, but i managed to work out a way to be able to loosen the brace to be able to drive - my child also became very ill at the same time. I needed to be able to get about.

so anything that would take away my independence would be so frustrating x

To be honest, I have no fear about it. I refuse to fear something that may or may not happen to me in the future.

It’ll be something I deal with in the present if it were to happen.

Gone and completely forgotten.

I fear my disability getting worse, and other parts malfunctioning.

I have a MH condition cPTSD. Most of the time I cope quite well, but yes it's a disability. Many of the challenges are due to the stigma around mental health.

I've come to terms with it myself in many ways, but my fear is being a burden on others.

We live in a society, which places value on functionality. In such a society disability is inherently a worry, one it seems most are blissfully unaware of until they, or someone they care for, is affected by it. Not being able to work is a fear for me. I would hate to rely upon the benefit system in this country.

So my fear isn't a condition, which can without warning cause me to re-experience trauma and abuse, as if it is happening now. It's having to depend upon the goodwill of a society, lacking in basic human compassion, in order to survive.

My hope is that they legalise euthanasia so that I have the option to die with some dignity, if that situation ever occurs.

I cope well with my disabilities. The only fear I have is what will happen when my parents are no longer around to support me. But I know I have good family and some good friends that will always be there.

I said I'd be back later but hadn't meant this much later!

Turns out where I was had crap signal and some excellent people to talk to, so I've been a dirty stop out

What do I fear?

Becoming unable to self propel anymore. My world will shrink substantially then and I will lose most of my independence, probably. I have pretty decent independence in my manual wheelchair at present.

Increases pain that cannot be alleviated.

My daughter missing out on stuff because of lack of access for me or because I'm not fit to take her.

Losing my job.

Becoming destitute (see above re: job).

Being judged as one of the "unworthy" disabled people by others.

Acquiring an additional disability on top of what I've got, e.g. losing my sight. I'm quite convinced I'll develop dementia due to family history and I really don't fancy that.

I’m classed as disabled, I have pulmonary fibrosis, I use oxygen most of the time, use oxygen cylinders when outdoors, biggest fear is running out before I get home, everything has to be preplanned

Yeah, pre planning everything is so tedious, isn't it? I'm sure the fear of running out of O2 is terrible. I hope you have a good supply because I know there have been shortages in some cases?

Somewhere

It's one of those things there's no point in fearing I guess. I was born with a degenerative eye condition. My mum was told I'd probably be blind before I turned 25, I'm 20yrs older than that and although my sight is very poor, it's still correctable with contacts. I'm under no illusion this might all change at any point again though. My sibling had a RTA several decades ago, and was at one point thought to eventually need to use a wheelchair due to a bone condition (which has slowed). My mum is no longer mobile which will not improve. Thems the cards we've been dealt, and we've been extremely lucky!

I fear flights of stairs, getting off of buses, long walks in crowds, losing what's left of my knee mobility, having to rely more and more on other people.

I don't have a fear as such it's more a deep down feeling I don't want to burden my loved ones with my inability to care for myself .

I've spent all my life caring for others getting help is something I've never really experienced even when I was really ill with cancer.(not including medical aid).

I already feel like a massive burden on my family. It's less of a fear and more of a demon for me.

I totally get it as a fear.

The Town by The Cross

I am as fit as a fiddle but memento mori and all that stuff.....

I fear being forced to live by a society that doesn't recognise the autonomy of the individual.

I watch my youngest daughter deteriorate on a daily basis and will assist her in any way she wishes when the time comes that she is completely locked in and no longer 'living'.

Granny, do you ever fear that you will become unable to aid your daughter or what might happen if you are no longer there? Feel free to tell me to sling my hook and mind my beeswax too. I'm being nosy.
