Does it still start/run regardless? If it does then its not the cambelt.

Is it petrol or diesel?

I'm only ruling out the cambelt, a car cannot run without one, so if the op's is then its one thing we can rule out!

Not thinking anything at the moment just need to know the colour of smoke as that will give an indication of what it may be, could be rings, head gasket turbo oil seals

"mine was the cambelt and didnt go boom!!!!! "

They don't, but I'm assuming the op just used 'boom' as an expression.

If its clouds of smoke then it'll either be oil or water (possibly a blown turbo if it has one)...

Check the coolant level. Also check if the coolant is covered in a layer of oily scum. Also check the dipstick and oil filler cap for white residue that looks like mayonnaise.

Before it died did you get any warning lights or notice the engine temp increase? Has it been down on power or running rough at all?

May all sound daft but it will help make a diagnosis, although to be fair there's no way anyone on here could be 100% certain without actually looking at the car.

Agreed, we can all give you an idea of what it might be but until you have someone look at it you won't really know.

Good chance it is the head gasket or fuel contamination ( white or grey smoke )

Being as you've not actually asked and basically been sarcastic about everyone else's questions to the op who was the one asking for help I don't think its mean at all...

Not sarcastic at all, I did offer the number of a local mechanic to start with, also it does sound exactly what went wrong with mine but I also know that a mechanic, no matter how good he is, is hardly likely to be able to diagnose a fault from a description in a forum. That's not me saying that neither of you are not good mechanics, I've worked with some of the best.

Assumptions is the mother of all fuck ups, it is quite easy to diagnose faults given the information from the person with the problems. Best not to say anything rather than make asumptions

Comments like:

"

And

"Mine smoked a lot and wasn't any of them "

Really weren't helpful though were they. They also weren't asking for help either...

If and its a big if its the same as what went on mine, it was the diesel pump, pretty expensive, which is why I didn't assume earlier, I hope its nothing to serious as we all know these things come at the worst time, hope you get it sorted, as I said I do have the name of a guy over your way that we use at work.

Accelerator overrunning, white smoke. Crunching sounds, gears not engaging as accelerator doesnt pick up. Boom snap clutch breaks car no start again.

Happened to our car recently.
