Maybe, and here me out here, maybe play the game a little too. No one likes someone who seems to be constantly refreshing the app, and replies within 30 seconds of sending a message.

It's fine to treat messages like email. If your connection with someone evolves so that you both feel like taking your chat to a more dynamic messaging app, them so be it, but giving a hint of neediness or desperation won't lead to that.
