"Children seem to have a built in parent blocker They can sense when you want to have fun" When they get to their early and mid teens they begin to ask *really* awkward questions about your nights out too.

Oh I’m hoping to be honest by that point. I bet they won’t ask questions then " We found that honesty made them stop asking questions pdq. They didn't believe us for a start

"Children seem to have a built in parent blocker They can sense when you want to have fun When they get to their early and mid teens they begin to ask *really* awkward questions about your nights out too. " My older children don't live at home. And I don't often go on "night out" unless they are with their dad or occasionally having a sleepover at my mums.

"This is why I never arranged meets during school hours, you never know if one needs picking up early " But as a single parent I personally would rather meet during the school house than get babysitters in constantly. So when they need or want me I'm here. When they don't need me I'm not. It's not so much of a complaint. But it's just so typical that they always seem to be ill when you have something on

"These things happen and it can't be helped. I don't have kids, but I used to look after my dad who was ill and work shifts. Sometimes I had to cancel if he got taken to Hopsital or something else happened. I always let people know ASAP and they always knew upfront that my dad was my priority when we'd chatted. It's sods law though, when you've arranged a meet and are looking forward to it. " I always let people know I'm a single mum. At do things around the kids. Also that i never have anyone over when there are here even asleep. I also way parent 1st, horby 2nd

"After my wife died, my friends were all get back out there it'll be good for you. You're not just a dad etc etc. So I eventually gave it a whirl. The amount of times my kids would block me. I'd be getting grief from women who were single mums themselves and had said 'my kids come first'. I basically gave up until they left school." Well, fuck! There's no hope for me then

"Hopefully Op the person you were going to meet understood and realised that your kids come first " Oh yes he did completely. As I said its just the irony of it.

"In my case they dont have to be sick to spoil things. My kids are teenagers and above but seem to just appear out of the ether when i have meets planned and thus have to abandon or delay them on occasions. Is this ability 'in built' or 'learnt' or 'intuition' to stop parents having some extra curricula activities of their own? The mind boggles ffs" I have 2 older teenagers who don't live at home and don't live in the same area. But I'm still.worried that one of the older ones will just turn up when the younger ones are away at their dad's and just walk in the house and I have someone over.

Yes I totally get where you are coming from. Its that fear of them appearing that can make you uneasy enough not to enjoy the meetings as you're always on edge. I wish i had a pancea for this to share with you but unfortunately we just have to play the hand we are dealt with here. You have my full empathy and I hope you can find an elixir to help you enjoy here in full.
