Do you find medical receptionists annoying?

I’ve just had an experience with a really lovely one and I am rethinking my position.

I think we as a society have turned a corner. They’re getting nicer

My mum was one of the lovely ones, everyone wanted to talk to her.

But there are some battle axes at my surgery now.

Yes and no. Sometimes they can come across in a way that's very frustrating as a customer. But i have massive sympathy for the absolutely relentless shit they must have to deal with all day every day, i think it's probably impossible to do that job and not end up hardened by it

It’s been a very very long time since I had to speak to one, but she was a nosey Doris. I just set her straight and said I’d discuss my problem with the qualified medical practitioner, rather than the answering service.

Dont get me started! They are only doing their job.... Oh really? If that is being rude, obnoxious and making access to health care impossible then yes. Congrats on your pleasant experience pickle. May it continue if you need the drs again.

See.. It can be done.

Speak to one? You have to be a in long queue to speak to one! I tried this about half hour ago and they cut me off due to people waiting, so e consult is the way forward!

Honestly, I think it’s a thankless job. You’re the front line of communication for people who are ill, worried, frustrated with not being able to access the medical services they want. You bear the brunt of people’s frustrations. Many medical receptionists are now asked to triage patients too, and lots of patients don’t like it. I'm not saying they all have perfect communication skills but I think many are doing the best they can in a difficult environment.

At my doctors they are lovely but they have been their for years and years.

I want to state for the record that it is a tough job; they often have an impossible task and take the brunt of public frustration. I also have an aunt who works as a receptionist in a hospital, so I do get to hear the other side of the story, frequently.

With that in mind... Yes.

Always on the move

I find, if you give them a really embarrassing or insane story, they'll stop asking questions and just give you an appointment

I get they’re there to do a job and keep appointments open for people who genuinely need them. But sometimes they’re so deliberately obstructive.

Also, who gets to make the call whether it’s an emergency or not? Obviously if it’s an emergency, I’m going to the bloody hospital.

I’ve always found them to be compassionate and helpful, maybe we’re just lucky with our local service staff.

The cunt that staffs our local petrol station who calls me ‘my sweet ‘in this absolutely ridiculous sickly sweet voice is very annoying though.

Why do people think receptionists are nosey because they’re interested? They ask because they’re asked to by the nurses and doctors. They couldn’t give a shit about why you’re there

I’ve never had an issue with a rude receptionist. I’ve moved around a lot and have been with many different ones and never had an issue. I’ve never been rude to one though so maybe that’s why

I’m always extra polite. They’re just rude and think they know better even when the doctor tells you something they know better. But I’m sorry if you are friends with one. I don’t mean to offend
