Burglar Jailed after Private Prosecution

Chelmsford

Reports that a prolific burglar broke into a Marks and Spencer store in Streatham and nicked £500 of steak and cases of Prosecco. Police refused to investigate and the store brought a private prosecution using a 'private police force' and the lag was jailed for 12 months. The Chief of Police is apparently investigating it's own actions rather than investigate the time. With a Chief of Police like this it's no wonder we have private police forces. Do it yourself Britain. What's going on here guys,? It's all over the news

If police aren't going to investigate, let alone prosecute anyone, then thieving in stores will become more rife.

I know in a local store in town, they have started checking empty cartier bags when you reach the manned checkout. This is great but not ideal as most supermarkets have more self checkouts than man checkouts.

Market Harborough/ Kettering

A friend of mine works in Waitrose and the police have told them that unless the scumbags have nicked more than £200's worth of goods they won't even turn up. Guess what the scumbags are doing? Yep, grabbing about £180's worth each time they go in!!

Most of the large supermarkets tell the staff not to bother about it, while masses of theft will be driving up prices for the rest of us.

Surprised they're leaving around £19.99 each time they go in

What would you have the staff do? There are too many reports of people getting attacked after trying to intervene for me to risk my health and well being. Supermarkets plan for a certain level off loss (whether that be through damages, breakages or theft)

They should bring back the gibbet for those found guilty. A gibbet in every town shopping centre

Ita not up to the staff to put themselves in danger. All they can do is report it.

I'd like to complain about my time being wasted cos I sat slack jawed thinking that people carry CARTIER bags to do the shopping.... Then the penny dropped n me jaw slammed shut

Streatham- the home of famous UK Rap artist Dave.

You usually add a line like that in the OP, Tom. So I thought I’d just mention this as you forgot on this occasion.

No. Tom means a gibbet. A metal cage where the thief is hoisted and the warning is sent to all thieves that stealing is not tolerated ..

No one has the right to ask to see the contents of your bag or even ask to see your receipt. These are your personal possessions and even if an alarm goes off as you exit the shop they still have no right to ask. You have the right to not show anyone something that is legally yours. Obviously this is different for entering a venue like a club or concert as they can refuse entry for safety reasons.

Of course they have the right to ASK to look in your bag or see your receipt. What they don't have the right in law to do is to compel you to show a receipt or look in your bag.

Now Tom is very public spirited and when the alarm goes off on exiting the door it could often be down to more than one person. The safety guard is trying to earn an honest living. Tom offers his bag for inspection and his receipt. It is the polite thing to do. Manners cost Nothing

I personally don't have an issue if the person on a checkout asks to see inside a carrier bag, they are just checking for goods that you aren't wanting to pay for.

No different in a club or a shop, both can be refused for safety issues. But this wasn't what the post is about.

This is not just a prosecution, this is an M&S prosecution!

I was M&S I would put aside the several million quid that I was going to lose through shoplifting over the next few years and spend it now on private prosecutions against _everyone_ who shoplifts in the stores. Send a strong signal against anyone who takes stuff without paying and make it known so that it is not worthwhile.

Obviously that would shift the problem elsewhere but that is not M&Ss problem.
