Especially as it was a Mancunian portraying an out of work scouser.

When you think about it, Boys From The Black Stuff, like a handful of other programmes (Cathy Come Home, A Taste of Honey, Auf Wiedersehen Pet etc) actually made a difference to the society in which we live. Bernard Hill / Yosser Hughes shone a spotlight on unemployment, poverty, mental health and how they are connected. Not many actors have played parts that have changed society. More than 40 years on and it is still relevant.
