Fat person in your gym

Thoughts? Concerns? Disgust? Acceptance? Cheerleading?

Remember... the "morbidly obese" share locker rooms, pools, classes, saunas..

If you see one of us... what's your reaction?

Just a quick poll. Shut it down of you don't like it.

I'm one of the obese people in the gym. I don't take any notice. I do my thing, talk to my PT, joke with the mahoosively jacked dude who once made a potentially inappropriate joke without realising it, and it was quite hilarious. So yeah.

As long as you ain't trying to make a video I don't care less,

I know what an effort is it to even bother, I dont get the 'judgement' they are trying to better themselves like everyone else there.

As for sharing spaces...if a person doesn't like it, they should be the one to leave.

I'm guessing it'll depend on the gym and the clientele.

Thankfully my normal one is a bit of a dump so nobody who goes there when I'm there really gives a damn about what anyone else is looking like.

I drag my flabby self into the pool in my swimsuit and don't get a second glance - if anyone feels any kind of way about it they don't make it obvious.

No thoughts of disgust, or otherwise negativity.

There was a lady who was classed as large in size in my yoga class a few years ago. She could do poses that I, half her size, couldn’t. Goes to show size alone isn’t the full picture in a gym.

I agree with scarlet I don't think anyone really notices. Most people go to the gym for themselves not others. If your trying to better your life then that's a huge positive in my eyes though

Over many years I was in gym I genuinely never witnessed gym fit people mocking or staring at over weight or super skinny people. If anything, they would be pleased to see them there. I know I was always pleased to see them there. Do not let your own fears and misconceptions keep you out the gym, it is in your head only not the reality

I'm the fat person at the gym. Possibly not the biggest any more but I'm still fat.

I've never had negative comments. Looks. Anything like that.

Most of the time people are busy focusing on what they're doing. When they're not? Well those are the times I've had lovely people stepping in and giving me advice, support and once when I went in and started crying mid workout, giving me tissues. A smoothie. Space to talk.

I'm trying to get back in to it now and yeah sure, I have moments of thinking ah fuck I'm too big for this and then I realise that's nonsense. Others don't think that either.

For the first 4yrs back at the gym (as a wheelie rather than AB), I wore a baggy t-shirt because I was really self conscious. After a chat with my PT, I started wearing a sports crop top thingy and guess what? No-one really seems to have noticed. One person (a man) complimented it (in a nice way). So now I've ditched the baggy t-shirt.

I've never been a member of a gym.

(There was one I could use for free a few years ago and I never used it..)

I never used the ones in hotels either. But I take resistance bands to exercise in the room.

I have a makeshift gym the garage with ab machine, treadmill, weights...and have pull up bars in other rooms etc.

(I like going on long hikes)

I have an inversion table that I like to hang upside down on for a while..

-like dracula.

I have on occasion seen people react negatively to obese people in the gym.

I really don't understand that attitude though because, those people are obviously trying to lose some weight and get healthy.

If you are disgusted by obese people why would you feel negatively about them trying to lose weight?

I would argue that I would argue that obese people have more need, and therefore more right than anyone else to be in the gym!

As a coach in a gym I don't care what anyone looks like. All I ask is they give me all the effort they can. Some days they will have the energy to give 110% other days it will only be 70%. If that's the best they can do that day.....awesome. takes a lot of guts to walk into a gym.

As someone who has been overweight, I do think it's more of a problem with yourself rather than anyone else. I felt pretty shitty when I was bigger, and I assumed everyone else looked at me the same way I looked at myself. But that's very rarely what happens. So yeah, I don't think many people care. And if they do, they are not the type of people worth getting upset over.

Gonna potentially out myself here, but it went something like this:

*Dude picks up my PT and puts him in a headlock*

Me: I think I heard something crunch *whilst laughing*

Dude: It's fine, so long as he can get up and walk.

There are people with a "normal" bmi that are unfit.

There is people with a overweight bmi that are fit.

I read somewhere the risk of death is greater for unfit people of normal weight than it is for fit people who are in the overweight range.

I generally don't think anyone of anyone in the gym, (I usually have my headphones on just trying to get my work out done and get out of there).

That's why BMI is a poor way to judge by. It's originally from early 1800's I think and although the charts have been updated I think it's an outdated way to do it.

BMI is basically a load of nonsense! It’s not being used the way it was intended and is poorly formulated even for that.

There’s also “TOFI”’s - thin outside fat inside, I knew someone like that thin, apparently fit dropped dead of a heart attack at 47 cos they ate way too much fatty rubbish, they thought they were ok as they ran/exercised off the calories but calories are only part of the story, his cholesterol was insane!

Back to the original question.

I’m another fatty in the gym, self conscious yea but following a diabetes diagnosis last year knew I needed to make changes. Not easy.

Mostly it’s been a positive experience excepting the wee stalker I acquired at one point (following me to each machine and kept trying to strike up flirty conversation, I complained to staff and it was dealt with) and the older but slimmer guy who frankly DID look at me as if I didn’t belong and who tried to bump me off a machine mid reps.

It is rather amusing in my yoga class to see the surprise of slimmer newer participants at my flexibility and balance, but I’ve been doing yoga on and off for years.

If any of the “pros” on the thread would be happy to answer a question I’d be grateful

Adoration and cheering them on. The hardest step is always the first one. Coming to gym shows conviction. Should never judge as we have idea about their life choices past or circumstances or health. So good for them and equally they shouldn't care what others think. No one goes to the gym to be judged

Exactly, who on earth would rest for a long period of time for a compound exercise where they would mostly be working on strength when you can just rest for 30 seconds and go again to prove that you truly haven't pushed yourself in your last set?

*Dude picks up my PT and puts him in a headlock*

Me: I think I heard something crunch *whilst laughing*

Dude: It's fine, so long as he can get up and walk.

PT looks at me. I look at him. Both suppressing hysterics.

Dude: Looks at me, sitting in my wheelchair.

It was very funny "

Depends on the situation. If you are massively underweight or overweight then you may have medical complications caused by those conditions which in the modern world is completely avoidable in vast majority of cases.

For obesity by losing the weight some people are performing act of love for their bodies. Which can only really come from a point of acceptance. Bettering themselves so there medical complications or chance of medical complications are either reduced or non exsistent.

I think everyone knows that being a normal weight is optimal for human bodies. Nobody's that stupid.

Yet society tends to assume people outside those parameters are that stupid or incompetent.

Given how many people are outside those parameters, and how obvious it is, it's perhaps worth noting that there are other factors at play - poverty, psychological issues, etc.

I think those who have less problems and more advantages in life like to think they're somehow superior to those who are not. A bit like children who play video games in god mode and crow about how they're the best at all the video games, when they're friends are playing it on extra hard.

Congratulations, people with privilege. You won the genetic lottery and/ or were pushed out of a vagina that afforded you benefits other people don't have. Would you like a participation trophy?

Your own head is your worst enemy in a gym but you only have to look on social media to know we don't make this shit up. People being videoed and posted online by 'influencers' for clout and likes. Not just overweight people to be fair. A few big accounts (in terms of physique and followers) are starting to call it out and call for a ban on videoing in gyms.

"Fat person in your gym.

Tra-la-la-la-la."

Every time I see the thread, this goes through my head now, cheers Pete

I'm the fatty who SHOULD be in the gym.

I used to go, and thought people were looking at me and judging me then. But I also realise that's pretty self-centred and also more than likely pretty untrue, but when you have ridiculous anxiety from being badly bullied for a very long time, it's stuck to the very core of my self-hatred/belief system.

I think people do pass judgements but nothing that sticks, or stays, and for no longer than a second. But only because as humans that's what our brain instinctively do. (To keep us safe from "danger")

Whoever I see on their way to/from a gym, or running on the road/pavement, I silently applaud them, whoever they are, because they're doing better than I am.

Anyone that DOES go, please may you give me a bit of your 'get up and go' so I can indeed get up and go!!

Perhaps one of you could quietly approach them and tell them you think they're awesome? If any of you are qualified at all, offer some help or pointers, if they so desire.

In fairness, if you see someone regularly, smile, say hi, ask them if they're having a good day, or just say "alright?!"

A kind word sometimes goes so much further than you ever think it could. *shrug*

There’s a few overweight / obese people who use my gym (it’s a spit and sawdust type bodybuilding one), to be honest it bothers none of the people training there.

I say good luck to them and at least they are trying to keep fit.

One of the big girls has actually trained alongside me, I tried to help her out with how to do stuff properly and encourage her as she encouraged me (she was on light weights and I was on heavy).

Some of the powerlifting guys and girls could technically be classed as obese, however I wouldn’t say anything to them as they could snap me in two

I've had this talk with quite a few gym friends and we all seem to have the same view.

The majority of people attending gyms are there because they have issues with their own bodies and its very unlikely that anybody is even looking at you let alone judging you.

Some of the nicest, most helpful people I've met were from the gym.

Someone I worked with years ago REFUSED to divulge her weight during a discussion about everyone.

We could all see her body form and putting a number on it wouldn't have made any difference.

Only she knew her reason for not wanting to share.

Instead of asking what others would think and feel , it may be best for a person who isn't happy with their body to concentrate on what they think about issues around gym attendance themselves and not concern themselves too much about what others 'might' be thinking.

For what it's worth - I feel there is not a lot of deep reflection/honesty on this thread. A lot of politeness yes but honesty no.

I can't pretend I don't see what is different about people , be that their body shape, disability , race , age.

I see obesity. I don't feel disgust but I see it.

So, I'm fat, obese, whatever you want to call it, and I absolutely detest the gym.

As a fat person who has been to the gym before, it takes a lot. It is mentally daunting as well as physically daunting to take that step and go through them doors and to think that you're being watched while working out, possibly judged, even though some of the comments on this thread say, good for them, you know, this, that, the other.

You still feel as a bigger person, or I used to feel as a bigger person, that I was judged while working out, even though a majority of people don't. They don't look at you as a size in the gym. They look at you as a person trying to do something about it.

So, if I do go to a gym in the future, and I see a person who is fat, obese, overweight, whatever you want to call it, I just look at them and in my head commend them and go, fantastic, you're doing something about it.

And me personally, gyms aren't for me. In the last seven months, I've lost nearly six stone just by doing stuff in my garden and dieting properly, watching what I eat, things like that. So, are gyms for me? No.

Are gyms for bigger people, obese people, fat people? I hate the word obese.

In general, they're for everyone, gyms are. And anybody who goes in there, I absolutely commend. So, a fat person in the gym for me, is just fair play for getting your life together, having the confidence to walk through that door, get on that machine and do something about something that is potentially crippling you in life. To me, that's commendable.

La la land

I've watched this thread and it is coming across a bit fake to me.

I don't notice others in the gym, seems a bit unrealistic. Maybe when you're in a middle of a set I would agree. But what about the time in-between them or when you're walking from the floor to the changing rooms? You do notice the people around you, from the person who is overweight to the figure you admire. If you didn't notice people you'd be constantly walking into them.

And a many have said fair play to the overweight people for attending the gym. It's kind of a bit patronising isn't it? Do you think that of someone who isn't overweight? And even if you think good for you, it is because you think good for them for trying to loose weight? Or is it oh my gosh look how much they've lifted I couldn't lift that much, good for them?

Not every big person goes to the gym to loose weight, some of us do it for our mental health, to feel stronger in our own bodies.

When you go to the gym it's worth remembering this:

You are there for you and no one else. Its a gym not a beauty contest or a fashion parade. The only person you have to impress is yourself and the only competition you are in is with you. And every step you take matters..

Go for you.

I've piled weight on over the last couple of years, currently 126 kg , to embarrassed to go to a gym and swimming isn't even a consideration

"Thoughts? Concerns? Disgust? Acceptance? Cheerleading?

Remember... the "morbidly obese" share locker rooms, pools, classes, saunas..

If you see one of us... what's your reaction?

Just a quick poll. Shut it down of you don't like it."

I have love & respect for a person who identifies a problem & actively does something to resolve it than just sit in self pity, moan or make excuses (with a few exceptions ofcourse lol).

I’m not 1 to go round cheering someone on (can be seen as patronising) but would give them an approving nod & let us crack on with the hard work ahead

wonderland.

One of the reasons as a bigger lady that I dislike the gym so much is the way I've been commented on like I'm not there..sniggered at and made to feel bad.

I was never going to be one of those people that enjoyed the gym... but it's never somewhere I look forward to going to

Swimming isn't quite as bad as I go.. get in the water and can't see or hear others

I have to agree.

While it's true that during intense sets, focus narrows, in between sets or transitions, we naturally observe our surroundings. Acknowledging people of all body types at the gym should stem from genuine respect, not condescension. Everyone has their reasons for being there, whether it's for physical health, mental well-being, or personal strength.

Going for a walk is not necessarily something everyone can do. There many be very legitimate reasons why "just go for a walk" isn't possible.

You are quite right but he stated that he is embarrassed to go to the gym so I gave him an option. If he can't do that through any form of disability or restriction then there are other options that don't involve leaving the house

Every time I step in a new gym I get a bit nervous so I wouldn't judge anyone. Good for them!

I find it's best not to make specific suggestions, not knowing people's physical abilities or health status. I find it best to suggest they take advice from a healthcare professional. GP surgeries now have social prescribers who are able to get involved with things like recommending safe and appropriate physical activity.

I have lost count of the times I've been told on here "just go for a walk" and posters have doubled down when I've said that is completely impossible.

I go to a council run gym

There are more people out of shape than in shape

Not that you really notice anyone beyond a passing glance anyway

I don't go to be looked at or accepted, I go to work on myself

I assume that others are there for that too

I walk 2-3 hours every day, usually up my local hills. It doesn't help with the weight but it does a huge amount for my general fitness, breathing (which I have struggled with for 60 years) and mental health.

I do have several friends and neighbours who have built their own gyms in converted shed. Partly for convenience, partly for long term cost and partly to save them from embarrassment in the early days.

As I said. I honestly can't remember anybody I saw at the gym apart from the very old man. Obviously I noticed them at the time or as has been said I'd have bumped in to them but I don't think any of us should assume we impact on other people apart from very briefly.
