"We check ours work every time my hubby cooks N" It is time to ban him from the kitchen Yes you guys need to check them, they do save life. I wonder how many students who rent a room with my company would have been killed without them

"Mine are the electric ones that don't need batteries..." don't they require s back up battery in case of power failure?

"We check ours work every time my hubby cooks N" Joking aside, that's good, no better way of testing yours! Have been to hundreds of house fires where the home owners stand amongst the charred remains looking up at the ceiling at the smoke alarm with its cover hanging down saying " we took the battery out cos it kept going off when we were cooking"

"Mine are the electric ones that don't need batteries..." are you sure? I think you will find that even hard wired ones need batteries as a back up!!

"We check ours work every time my hubby cooks N" Ours is the 'dinner gong' for Steve - when that starts going he knows it time to wash his hands and sit at the table!! I wouldn't be able to sleep without the smoke alarm, Z

"I told my sister off last week as hers was beeping when i went apparently it has been doing it for a few days as the battery needs replacing " good for you, May be worth checking to see if she has changed the batteries. Another classic problem is that people remove the batteries to stop that annoying bleep or remove the battery so to use it in a kiddies toy or remote control !!!!

"We live in quite a small flat with a smoke detector in the hall. Opening the door after a shower or while cooking sets it off. When the washing machine caught fire the detector failed to sound despite the flat being full of smoke. Any idea why?" is the detector flat on the ceiling or vertical on a wall?

" When the washing machine caught fire the detector failed to sound despite the flat being full of smoke. Any idea why?" If the washing machine is in the kitchen, you need to check if that detector is not a heat detector We have some in our halls and they bring confusion sometime

Probably a heat detector not a smoke, if you think it might be faulty change it

"I am shocked by the amount of people who don't have any! Or those who don't have working ones! You have all seen the adverts on tv or have heard them on the radio! It is not an exaggeration when they say that they save lives, they really do!! It is also important to have a fire plan and discuss it with all of the family! If you need any advice please feel free to ask or pm me!! " I couldn't agree more with you. 5 years ago I rented a room in a large house, I was the only 1 to have both a back and front door key. All the smoke alarms had been pulled apart. It was a 3 storey townhouse I was on the top floor along with an 18 year old girl. One night I came home late came in through the back door into the kitchen, there was a burning teatowel and a gas ring left on, after dealing with that I walked into the dinning room and found another tenant passed out pissed, it turns out he had started cooking. I moved out the next day and reported the landlady. Last year I was flat hunting and was staying with my brother, his flat was the top floor, I opened the front door at 6.30am to go to work was met by a wall of smoke , I had to go inside until 2 firefighters came and got me. I'm in my own flat now but the landlady is hot on safety, wgen I moved in she came and checked the alarms etc. In my tenancy agreement is a form proving this has been done.

"What about deaf people who can't hear the bleeps? What do they do? There is all types of things available, things that flash and vibrate! " The flashing things only work for people who can actually see them, either because of where they're positioned or if the deaf person isn't blind or has Usher's syndrome too. Vibrating alarms tend only to be available in commercial premises except for the vibrating pillow alarms which can be wired into domestic smoke detectors. They're only really useful when the person is in bed.
