UK weekend away ideas in the south

Jump to newest

Evening,

Anyone got any recommendations for a weekend away preferably in the south of the UK.

Done the north many times but wants to explore the south.

Wish to avoid London, not adverse to go right down to the coast.

City or country is fine. Somewhere with a decent hotel, decent food.

Open to ideas

Bath is really lovely with Architectural Spa's etc & not too far from Cheddar caves or Weston Super Mare if driving or even Stonehenge but be prepared to be underwhelmed if there.

I've been to Stonehenge many times and have never yet been underwhelmed. It's a simple equation. If you don't get ancient history and enigma, don't spend the money to go and look!

But I agree, Somerset/Wiltshire/Avon area is great and gives a lot of options for things to do.

Thank you both.

Always did want to check out Stonehenge.

A little country road driving.

Some decent seafood.

Any recommendations on places to stay?

Last time I did Stonehenge, I actually stayed in a B&B in Glastonbury. There are some lovely walks and historical/mystical places to visit in the Town as well.

You sound like a wealth of knowledge, written a tour guide perhaps!

St Albans is lovely, admittedly not on the coastline but a small city with a brilliant food scene, lovely scenic walks. In terms of hotels, there's the Samuel Ryder but personally I think you'd like Sopwell House more. There are lovely drives to be had around there as well.

There's also the Cotswolds. Some beautiful places to stay in, lots of lovely countryside, incredible restaurants and pubs (albeit on the pricier side), cute markets and villages. Avoid during the summer holidays.

I'm currently looking at Brighton after a dear friend raved about it as a mini queercation. Oh, and I really like Winchester! Okay, that's enough waffle.

Bath is nice but overpriced.

Avoid Weston like the plague.

Cheddar is good if you're up for a long walk up the gorge but the caves aren't all that.

Personally I'd avoid Somerset completely.

I'd just head down to the Devon coast or maybe Poole.

Try Poole, I’ve just been there today. Beautiful sandy beaches with cliffs and woodland backdrop and relatively sophisticated atmosphere for the seaside. (Studland down the road too for nudist filth… )

I’m getting the vibe I should just head as far down south as I can!

It’s going to be a drive down, at this rate it’s going to turn into a 5 night break!

Brighton is good for night life. Watch them massive 2 meter wide seagulls tho. One nicked my 10oz steak and flew off with it

If you're not into London then I tend to think Brighton is London by the sea.

Jurassic Coast, Dorset? Lovely beaches and clifftop walks. The surrounding villages are very pretty too.

Other people have mentioned Cotswolds. That area is lovely too.

Brighton is a great night out. I stayed at the Queens Hotel just down from the pier, made a good base. Have a go on the i360 while you're there, you get a great view from 400ft up.

I definitely don't so happy seeing it from the A303.

OP, George & Pilgims in Glastonbury is unique & a bit Gothic for a stay plus very close to the 'Clarks' outlet shopping village. Wherever you choose, enjoy it.

Nr Cardiff or at Chams Darlaston

The South Hams are a lovely part of Devon or the Gower in South West Wales.

Lovely beaches at both.

Depends how far you want to drive.

At the moment I’m just taking all the recommendations in.

Then I’ll my initial resting place and work something out from there.

I can see a lot of driving coming my way.

Yeah, I'd narrow it down a bit. Like the North, there's a lot to choose from down here! And the drive to Cornwall is a pain so I wouldn't plan on making that a "fun" bit of the journey, but that's my bias!

Southampton/isle of wight/ everywhere

The Isle of Wight is beautiful. I lived there for many years, and still visit every few weeks.

Some great hotels, airbnb, or campsites, depending on your preferences. Plenty of walks, not bad pub/club scene if you prefer that, and lots of swingers!!
