Coming from an obviously ignorant man...can I ask any women out there; what their experiences with HRT was/is concerning their libido?

Did it make any difference at all, either for better of for worse?

Just depends on the meds and the symptoms really it’s not straight forward at all. And the outcome can vary person to person so no easy answer for you OP

I think it's great to be able to chat about things like this on here.

And to be able to get a few impartial thoughts from women who know.

Next Door

I've been on hrt for approx 3 yrs and it's only been the last 2mths that I can say my libido has appeared again.

In the 3 yrs I've had different combinations of hrt.

I found out in Jan, that I wasn't absorbing the gel and have been changed to spray.

Also I started testosterone in Feb.

I feel a totally different person, definitely back to my old self 5 yrs ago.

Highly recommend going to gp and getting a referral to menopause clinic, ask for all female hormones levels to be checked via bloods. If you can't get this then go private.

For me it has been a struggle until I got the correct combination.

I guess I would ask why you as a man are asking & what you want to know/ why?

I am a great advocate of hrt for many symptoms & each women needs personalised advice.

Testosterone has been a game changer for my libido ( though obviously it’s not for everyone)

The hardest part is getting a lady to recongnise she needs HRT I guess its a difficult time for a lady but as a man we struggle to be supportive as its usually us that gets the brunt of the anger

It is hard to get a female to recognise that she may need hrt. Also people don't do enough self learning on the symptoms of menopause and benefits of hrt and other supplements.

I've had friends saying they still feel rubbish while taking hrt, and won't go back to the gp and say symptoms haven't improved.

I'm led to believe small doses of testosterone is a game changer.

If you are just getting to the stage where your wife/partner is considering it, Id say hang in there, and show incredible patience - it'll probably be a few years of very up and down levels in terms of libido..

(Hope my answer doesn't start anyone off on a rant ...)

(!!, got to try and keep a sense of humour throughout the menopause)

HRT is not going to magically change a woman's libido. It may help but menopause has other effects on many woman, changing body shape and joint pain ... poor sleep etc

Remember women's sexual desire is responsive. You need to give space and time for emotional intimacy and for her to feel supported and safe ... without pressure to have sex

Why the irascible comment?

It was a humbling question, inoffensive and reasonable.

Hi O.P. Thanks for asking this Q.

H.R.T isn't intended to fire up women's sexual desires so that she will want sex until the day she dies.

It was used to alleviate menopause symptoms and help minimise heart and bone deterioration.

There is some evidence that some women report improved libido after taking HRT but equally there is evidence that quite a high number don't.

A lower sex drive is natural for both sexes after a certain age.

I still enjoy sex but don't expect to be at it like a rabid bunny every half hour, just as I don't expect to sprint for a bus without busting my string bag and losing my oranges.

It’s still a male led industry with tons of biases. If the private consultants put as much effort into female health as they do aesthetics it could be game changing for a lot of women. Interesting if your a man over 40, you only have to mention you’re a bit tired and they’re wanting to give you testosterone

I've been looked after by my NHS GP and she has been great.

I have average trust to NHS. Do not want to wait 12 months for the first appointment in the clinic.

From the other side… Private clinics are not cheap.

I tried to reach you but looks like I cannot.

I know what you mean.

I read here on the forum a lot of messages about how selfish men are but I think it is also important for us.

I support wife a lot, but cannot switch off my needs.

HRT hasn't had any effect on my sex drive but has had a really positive effect on my menopause symptoms. Massively reduced brain fog and no hot flushes.

Need to get the right one though.

HRT made me bleed like nobody's business, but then I'm not exactly going through a standard menopause.

I can say that suppressing my oestrogen chemically has negatively impacted my sex drive.

HRT has been a wonderful for me, I'm on patches for oestrogen, gel for Testosterone. I no longer need progesterone as I've now had a Hysterectomy, also have oestrogen cream. Is it the libido which has gone and/or other problems which are leading to the lack of interest? Is sex painful for her? Is she having numerous hot flushes, sleeping problems, mood swings or depression and fatigue? I was referred to a Menopause Clinic to obtain Testosterone and to go higher in patches.

My other thought was about any natural treatments and not medication.

However, I'm not sure if something like that exists and is efficient.

Looks like she will not go for it. Family history of cancer.

We need to research for a natural solution, if exists.
